Don't hate me... I don't think we should activate Troy Brown
I know I know.
He is a fan favorite, will probably go in Patriots Hall of Fame if there is one. But, the guy is too old. And with the current roster of speedy wide receivers (Moss, Stallworth, Gaffney, Welker) and others currently on PUP/injured list (Chad Jackson, Washington) we cannot and should not make a roster spot available for Brown. I would say to put him on the practice squad, but I don't know if that is a possibility for a veteran as seasoned as he is. He might view it as an insult.
And don't get me started on Bruschi...
What do you think?

Re: Don't hate me... I don't think we should activate Troy Brown
Troy is a great guy to keep around 'just in case'
But,No I do not think he is needed on this team without a major injury bug to the corps,We have no weaknesses at WR right now.
I read some here think he would be placed on IR later when he could be activated but since this is very likely his final year that would really make no sense to me other than to either activate him on the roster or cut him,If they put him on IR I think it would be just for the sake of getting a ring.

He is? Based on what? The number? I think this is kind of a simplistic argument and not backed up by a lot of cause-and-effect. Obviously he's not what he once was, but if he's what he was, say, LAST YEAR, that's definitely worth having on this team. It's got a lot of benefits actually:
1) a good solid back-up for "the Welker role"
2) a proven, clutch player
3) versatility
4) the tiny effect of goodwill for the team, especially the vets (on its own this would not be enough, but as an additional silver-lining, I think it has value)
I think there are decent reasons to not activate Troy Brown. I don't agree with any that I've heard (in this thread or otherwise), but there are arguable points to be made. IMO, you haven't made any here and I'm not sure it gets much more flimsy than..."the guy is too old."

Sorry. (Points for bravery, though.)
My main reason for not activating Troy is that we have a lot of other options; we have a group of talented young and seasoned veterans on our receivers corps. Would you be willing to part with one of them to make room for Troy? Would you can Gaffney, Washington, or Jackson who can give you production probably this year and beyond (and possibly be trade bait) for a guy who will only be around for a year or 2 years at most? I love Troy but I think our team must make the hard decision as to when to let a respected and well-loved veteran go.

I would can Gaffney or Washington for Troy Brown in a heartbeat. Both are on one-year deals, not that that would make a difference to me. I just don't know that it's necessarily the right move - personnel-wise, not having anything to do with sentimentality. Troy can contribute in more ways that are RELEVANT for a 4th/5th WR than Gaff or Washington.
Re: Don't hate me... I don't think we should activate Troy Brown
Brown is the only true backup we have for Welker.
I also fail to see what advantages Gaffney has over him except when height is at a premium, e.g. in the red zone. And, hard though that may be to imagine, we have a lot of tall receivers right now.
