If the condition was : Win the Super Bowl, we won't tag you - I'd be fine with that as we'd get the big one again. Some regular season win total or snaps played ? No thanks.

Now, if there's a mutual condition - we won't tag you but you can't sign with an AFC East team - that would be a little better.

The only way I can see this being true is if it's something ridiculous like winning 16 games - this would enable Asante to claim, truthfully, that he got some concession, without the Pats giving much up. Otherwise, it's a ridiculously STUPID move by an F.O. that is hardly ever stupid, ridiculously so or otherwise.

If they took it straight from vegas it's 11.5 games

16?! That's just wishful thinking. I would be pretty happy if they retained the right to match any offer.

Maybe it has something to do with the fact that two CBs have already been lost and the season hasn't even started yet.

Both sides were being hurt from the stand still. It's a compromise and is in everybody's best interest.

I may be looking at this all wrong but here's the way I see it.

Give Asante the deal he wants regarding the franchise tag, stipulations attached.

You shore up a secondary which I think looks decent this year and provides you a legitimate shot to win it all.

Next year, Asante meets all his goals and signs the big deal he's looking for elsewhere.

Where does that leave you in 2008? Well, you have Randall Gay who's looked pretty damn good, plus allows you tons of cap space to extend Vince Wilfork.

Just trying to look at things positively.

Would have rather kept the tag available for next year but who the hell knows what goes on behind the scenes.

If this report is indeed true, I can't help but imagine that there's something going on that we don't know about. The Pats organization is not stupid enough to offer anything if AS had absolutely no leverage. It's possible that Samuel really would have stayed out for ten games and flew up only as a gesture of good faith. Who knows? Not me, and we probably will never know what really went on. We'll see next year if he's franchised or not...

I wonder if the report is true. Seems as if the Pats' organization didn't have to give up their option for another franchise tag. On the other hand, getting a likely 3rd round compensatory pick for the loss of Asante to free agency isn't such a bad thing either. But getting a likely 1st rounder in a trade would be even better.

If the report is true, I can only surmise that the team expects to sign Asante to a longterm contract at the end of the season. Does anybody know whether they are able to extend him during the 2007-08 season?

BTW, I am sure that the deal was agreed upon before Asante stepped on that airplane to Boston.

They are not allowed to discuss an extension, but I'm sure if they really wanted to get it done they could discuss it and what not without making it known.
