Default Asante hasn't signed his tender yet, wants no tag in 2008

...though he will tomorrow. From ProFootballTalk.com:

Quote:
SAMUEL TRYING TO GET PATS TO AGREE NOT TO FRANCHISE HIM IN 2008

Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that Patriots cornerback Asante Samuel did not sign his franchise tender on Monday, because the Samuel camp is trying to get the team to agree not to use the franchise tag on him again, apparently if he meets a specific playing-time threshold.

Schefter says that, absent a deal, Samuel will sign the tender on Tuesday as currently drafted.

Our guess? The Pats won't budge. Why should they? The Patriots can franchise him again in 2008 and then get something of value in exchange for his rights next March.
Not sure what how this accomplishes anything, if he signs tomorrow.

As much as I want Zante back, he gets no promise of no tag from me.

He wants the same deal that Briggs got in Chicago.

Heck, so do I! Doesn't mean either of us is going to get it, though.

(FWIW, I don't blame Asante a bit for trying. But I don't see why the Patriots would possibly yield on this. The most I could imagine would be an agreement to accept any trade above a certain threshold under a future franchise tag.)

Hope this doesn't mean he intends on being a locker room cancer this season.

"Schefter says that, absent a deal, Samuel will sign the tender on Tuesday as currently drafted."

His agent just gave up any shred of leverage he might still have had left by announcing that.

edit: Ooops - I read the first post too fast - thought Schefter was the agent. Clicked "Post" - then it clicked in my brain that Schefter is actually a writer. Still, SOMEONE in the Samuel camp must have told Schefter that or he would not have printed it as indisputable fact.

I cannot see the Pats agreeing to that. They will trade him before the draft in '08.

In re: to the lockerroom, I will let 37, 54 and 93 take care of that issue.

Realistically, it might be hard to sow any dissent over your $7.79mil salary.

That's some killer negotiating from Asante on that one! Dude, I want to play some poker with his team some day.

"OK, I'll raise you on this one, but if you call me, I'm gonna fold like a cheap suit. So, think on it well, my man." *high fives among Asante's guys*

His agents, instead of reading Sun Tzu's Art of War, read the collected sayings of the Italian high command of World War 2.

I could go on all day with this one. Comedy gold.

edit: I know it's Schefter, but if he knows it, the Pats know it. The Samuels team has telegraphed this fold like Teddy KGB after Mike figures out the Oreo tell ...
