Default Would you trade Samuel for...

I was reading Peter King and he had an interesting point about a team like the Saints having a ton of cap room and feeling they are very close to winning a title. Clearly their biggest need is CB where they were starting players who had been benched or cut by the team previously. If they thought they could add an impact player in a trade it might be worth it to them.

Saints, picking 27th in the first round, have about $21 million in cap room. If the Samuel contracts get no where do you trade him for the 27th pick and try to sign some FA's and use the picks to get one of the top CBs?

A quick look at this class.

Manning, Jr., Ricky UFA Bears CB
Brooks, Greg RFA Bengals CB
Bauman, Rashad UFA Bengals CB
James, Tory UFA Bengals CB
Greer, Jabari RFA Bills CB
Clements, Nate UFA Bills CB
Thomas, Kiwaukee UFA Bills CB
Hawkins, Mike ERFA Browns CB
Brown, Ralph UFA Browns CB
Russell, Brian UFA Browns CB
Adams, Blue RFA Buccaneers CB
Buchanon, Phillip UFA Buccaneers CB
Cox, Torrie UFA Buccaneers CB
Macklin, David UFA Cardinals CB
Tate, Robert UFA Cardinals CB
Sapp, Benny RFA Chiefs CB
Walls, Lenny UFA Chiefs CB
David, Jason RFA Colts CB
Harper, Nick UFA Colts CB
Jones, Nathan RFA Cowboys CB
Reeves, Jacques RFA Cowboys CB
Jackson, Eddie RFA Dolphins CB
Lehan, Michael UFA Dolphins CB
Hood, Roderick UFA Eagles CB
James, William UFA Eagles CB
Cash, Chris UFA Falcons CB
Walker, Frank UFA Giants CB
Webb, Dee ERFA Jaguars CB
Carroll, Ahmad RFA Jaguars CB
Poteat, Hank UFA Jets CB
Smith, Keith RFA Lions CB
Fletcher, Jamar UFA Lions CB
Morton, Christian ERFA Panthers CB
Howard, Reggie UFA Panthers CB
Williams, Gemara ERFA Patriots CB
Gay, Randall RFA Patriots CB
Mickens, Ray UFA Patriots CB
Samuel, Asante UFA Patriots CB
Spann, Antwain ERFA Patriots CB
Starks, Duane UFA Raiders CB
Fisher, Travis UFA Rams CB
Oglesby, Evan ERFA Ravens CB
Prude, Ronnie ERFA Ravens CB
Sams, B.J. RFA Ravens CB
Sapp, Gerome UFA Ravens CB
Fox, Vernon UFA Redskins CB
Jimoh, Ade UFA Redskins CB
Wright, Kenny UFA Redskins CB
Deloatch, Curtis RFA Saints CB
Groce, DeJuan UFA Saints CB
Williams, Jimmy UFA Seahawks CB
McKenzie, Chris ERFA Texans CB
Alexander, Roc RFA Texans CB
McCleon, Dexter UFA Texans CB
Sanders, Lewis UFA Texans CB
Hunter, Will ERFA Vikings CB

Plus rumored cuts because of the cap

CB Fred Smoot
CB Ken Lucas

If you could bet Lucas at 75% of the pay of Samuel and pick up a first rounder that you control for 5 years I think it's a good move. You can then look at signing Thomas and maybe getting an extension done with Warren.

I know people are of the mind to bring Samuel back and he'll be motivated but IMO his value will never be higher than it is now.

Just food for thought.

Yes, I make that trade. At pick #27 the player drafted is signed for 5 years at cheap money. It is very unlikely New Orleans would make a trade like this.

I think there's no way ANYONE here thinks that would be anything except the IDEAL situation. Trade him for a #1 pick to a team we hardly ever play, and then sign a decent+ corner to replace him? Done and done.

You "under-estimate" the people here.

according to espn, they think the top 2 corners are clements and samuel, and they're pretty much going to be competing for the biggest paycheck

i dont think the saints would trade their 27, there are few teams that have as much cap room as the saints...if anything they'll pay samuel or clements in free agency and keep their 1st round pick

whats interesting is how much each team will be willing to pay for clement or samuel, its not like a ty law, whos 30+, samuel is 25 or 26, and clements is 27, they both have 5, 6 years left in them....

all in all, i see samuel being the highest paid corner this year, since he's just now entering the prime of his career

not to mention his stellar pro bowl worthy season

I would love it if we traded him for that pick... that would be 3 picks in the 20s... ridiculous. we would hit at least 2. guaranteed.

If the Saints don't want to couldn't we trade with another team?
There has to be a stupid screwed up team that would do this trade or something very similar

Look at Seattle giving up a #1 for Branch to put them over the top. There's always going to be a team that feels they are soooooooo close that they'll over pay for the piece they feel will put them over the top.

I think BB/SP will explore options like this without a doubt.

Exactly. If someone will give a 20s pick (Seattle thought it would be 25+ pick) for Branch then I wouldn't put it past a team to give up a pick in the teens for Samuel considering he is more highly touted and playing a position that lacks star players (whereas WR is flooded with them).

Personally, I would rather pay Clement than Samuel. I think Clement is that big physical CB we have needed for a long time. He is better in press coverage than Samuel. I would give Clement the contract and tag and trade Samuel (at least in a perfect world scenario).

I think if anyone offers us a first rounder for Samuel, we take it. Going into this season, Samuel was arguably not even the best CB on the team. He really didn't play all that well early and had a great mid to end of the season and playoffs. How much of that was him going all out to get a big deal and how much of that was Samuel turning the corner into a great CB. It is a tough gamble for a guy due a huge contract.
