Re: Week 4 player of the week: Jarvis Green!
Although it's nice to see a Pats player's efforts rewarded, I think a little much is being made of Green's 3 sack day.
He's a good player, and a key contributor, but he's not an elite one, and I don't look forward to the flood of posts on this forum criticising our coaching staff for not having him on the field more whenever we use mostly 3-4.
Getting 3 sacks in a game is nice, but it's important to remember that these statistical achievments come as part of a combined defensive effort. BB himself pointed this out, according to Mike Reiss, who wrote in http://www.boston.com/sports/football/patriots/articles/2006/10/04/hobbs_broke_wrist_vs_denver/]today's Patriots Notebook:
Quote:
Although defensive lineman Jarvis Green was credited with a career-high three sacks in Sunday's win, coach Bill Belichick pointed out that two of the sacks wouldn't have been possible without some important help.
On Green's first sack, which caused Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer to fumble, linebacker Mike Vrabel had the key assist. When Vrabel faked a blitz over the middle, it caused Bengals right guard Bobbie Williams to take his initial step to the left, allowing Green to fight his way past him on the other side.
On Green's second sack, defensive lineman Richard Seymour pushed left guard Eric Steinbach into the pocket, forcing Palmer to step up into Green's rush.
