That's precisely my point.
An adult does something that is extremely dangerous but entirely his own decision (one that, in my view, he has every right to take) and his employer nevertheless has to protect himself because he lives in a culture in which the player could otherwise sue for the consequences of their own risk-taking.
I know that this is considered "normal" but still, I repeat, how sad is it?

Damn !! don`t your mama ever teach you to respect other religions. From a few comments i see who people who will sell their mom for a quick buck .
During Ramadan he is not fasting for 24hr. They have huge meal before sunrise and one right after sunset. So he is going to pack in the calories twice a day probabily more than a usual person in camp eats.
Some of them do drink water if needed and trust me he is not going to die of dehydration.
I am always shocked at ignorance of people who claim ,we have the best country in the world and never care to acknowledge one of the greatest quality of our country- tolerance and understanding to other religion.
btw , i am not muslim but that should not matter.

If he needs to practice his religion, that's OK. But as mentioned, the Vikes should have him sign a waiver as they were the ones who had to deal with the Stringer incident.

The bolded part was unneeded, unwanted, and unnecessary. I'm keeping it up there rather than delete it, as an example of what not to post on a football message board.
Please climb down from your soapbox. And if you feel a pressing need to make those kind of statements, political and religious forums are provided, free of charge, for you do do so.

I think it's a little more complicated in this case, because the employer is asking the employee to do something that has some inherent risks already.
Obviously, observing Ramadan isn't just a whim, it's a requirement of the faith. Most Muslim athletes (and even just regular folks with serious fitness regimes) routinely alter their workout patterns during Ramadan and monitor their bodies carefully to avoid danger.
Given that the team and its doctors handle the pacing and monitoring in this case, how much responsibility do they bear for the player's well-being? What should he expect of them, and what should they expect of him in terms of safety and communication? IMO it ought to be worked out in advance, in writing, not just because of the threat of lawsuits but to protect the player's health.

Here we go. Someone mentions something about a religion and here come the PC Police.
This makes absolutely no sense to me. "sell their mom for a quick buck"? How so?
What ignorance has been displayed here? Who exactly is not being tolerant and undersanding of anything?
And BTW, people have died as a result of dehydration from extreme exertion and exercise, especially in heat. And the huge meal he has in the morning isn't going to be helping him much at 4 PM during his second two-a-day. Do you think the emphasis on hydration these days is just for fun?
But mostly I'm perplexed at how any comment here is not completely tolerant.
And no one cares if you're a Muslim or not.

Re: OT: Vikings player to fast during camp/preseason
The thing is this is the same team that lost Korey Stringer, so one would think they'd be a bit hesitant about this. Course since that tragedy I'm sure they'll be monitoring him very closely. I don't suppose they want to really make an issue out of it and risk the wrath of the players' union.

Every Imam will say the same thing: During Ramadan you should fast between sunup and sundown, unless it endangers your health. It is the willingness to attempt the fast, rather than the actual completion that counts. He is to be commended for his adherence to the tenants of his faith, but he is acting foolish if it endangers his health.

Same thing with Jews and fasting on Yom Kippur. Probably most religions, I guess.
And one could rightly say that this gives him the option to drink during practice. But IMO (from a religious perspective) one could more rightly say that he should not be practicing.
I commend him for following his faith. I hope he doesn't get ill as a result.
