Claridge must be legit and ready to go this season.........I just don't get these moves after round 2. The Patriots had one of the worst defenses at seasons end with lame Samuels getting torched and we go all offense day one.

This guy is a good TE, Vince Young's security blanket last year. I thought the Pats would draft one in the 3rd or 4th round with this deep TE class. Thomas and Klopfenstein were the 2 I was hoping for, with Klopfenstein being the first choice, but he was already off the board. Hopefully, the 2 4th rounders are OLB and CB. I like OLB Stanley McClover of Auburn in the 4th, and hopefully they have an Asante Samuel type CB up their sleeve.

David Thomas scouting reports.

Strengths
Hands and Concentration
Route Running Skills
Red Zone Threat

Weaknesses
Blocking Ability
Downfield Receiving

Not the fastest or biggest tight end, Thomas compensates by playing with great intelligence and field awareness. Able to find the open spot in the field and very aware of helping the quarterback. Good hands... could be a red-zone asset in the NFL.

Quote:
Strengths:
Has very good hands...Runs excellent routes...Will make the tough catch and the ability to adjust to poorly thrown balls...Pretty good natural athlete with fine quickness...Plays faster than he times and sported an impressive yards per catch average in college...Is a threat in the red zone and has a knack for catching touchdowns...Smart and knows how to get open...Has a lot of experience and good intangibles...Productive and was Vince Young's favorite target in Austin.

Weaknesses:
Does not have the size or bulk you look for...Lacks elite timed speed and won't stretch the field...Is not a great blocker...Needs to get much stronger...Has trouble beating the jam...Does not have a lot of upside...Skill set will not be a good fit for every team and he will need to be in the right system to succeed.

Notes:
Has the looks of an H-Back or pass catching specialist at the next level...In the right situation he could be a nice weapon in the short passing game but size and speed limitations will always hold him back and put boundaries around his role.
Quote:
BIO: Three-year starter awarded All-Conference and All-Academic honors since his junior campaign. Led Texas in receiving as a senior with 50/613/5 after 25/430/5 the prior year.

POSITIVES: Athletic tight end who plays with a good degree of intelligence. Finds the open spot on the field and effectively uses his frame to shield away opponents. Has soft hands, makes the reception in stride and keeps the play in bounds. Possesses excellent field sense, gets past the sticks on third down and is always in tune with the quarterback. Gives effort as a blocker.

NEGATIVES: Rarely moves linebackers off the ball blocking. Not a consistent deep threat.

ANALYSIS: Lacking great upside, Thomas has been a consistent pass-catching threat who elevated his play the past three seasons. Should see significant playing time in third-down back/red-zone situations at the next level.

Interesting pick. I thought they'd go Byrd before Thomas if they went TE. Must be injury concerns.

Anyways, I think they went O again because they must've felt it wasn't worth it to take any of the LBs left that high. I don't think it's so much they like Thomas as it's the whole 'value' ideal.

I would like Kevin Simon with one of the 6th rounders.

And AJ Nicholson is still out there if they disregard his past.

i think we have an assante samuel type CB already...and he's better than anybody we could get now.

if we draft a DB tomorrow, he'll be a safety and he'll play ST only next year.

No. Graham is our blocking tightend. We wont rid our blocking tightend after getting another passing tight end along with Watson. When Watson has the attention on him, which believe me he will, then Thomas will be one of the suprise targets. And the fourth rounders will be LB and Safety, not CB, at least for the fourth rounders.

They'll find out Randy can't run consistently anymore. He'll drive [Tom] Brady and [Bill] Belichick crazy. This is just my personal opinion from what I saw: He's losing his legs. He's becoming an old man fast.

IMO this guy was not a "day one" pick. I can't see how he was the "best" player available OR the best TE left in the draft. The Pats still have pressing needs- TE was not a priority. He may be the next Ed McCaffrey but we have Watson & Graham, we need the next Willie McGinest.
