I read it from the horse's mouth. Wake himself said that people were knocking him because they were associating his name with some annoying guy named Derek on Canadian TV. I have no idea what Wake was talking about. I don't watch Canadian TV and I don't know the show. But Wake said that he was frequently a target of ridicule and so he changed it.

The article was all over the Penn State boards about 4 years ago when it happened. So, don't ask me. Ask Cameron. I can't even remember what the show was.

Well, the name-change story was fun while it lasted. Anyone want the truth?

http://cfldigest.com/espn-talks-cameron-wake/

Excerpt:
Quote:
Wake claims that was where he name change came in. He said the gym printed up an ID tag for him and mistakenly used his middle name. He also has been quoted in Canadian newspaper stories as saying he changed his name because he thought it might sound better to potential fitness clients.

Johnson, who still calls his recruit Derek, laughed at those explanations.

“He went through the ups and downs,” Johnson said. “I think that’s the reason why he changed his name, just to reinvent himself, to say ‘This isn’t the Derek Wake of old. This is a new Derek Wake.’”

Excerpt:

LMAO! No way man, he changed his name cause some guy on TV he didn't like had the same name!

Like all normal people do right? I hate that Ryan Seacrest guy, I think I'll head downtown and put in the forms to change my name!

Haha, you're a funny guy. Laugh all you want.

Wake said it. It wasn't a rumor. These were his words.

I wasn't the only one who remembered Wake's story. I asked the Penn State guys and they remembered that his teammates were comparing him to something called "Life with Derek." This is what Wake said. Maybe he was joking but the writer didn't seem to catch wind of it.

I thought we were talking about Rick Foley. Maybe we can discuss how he's called Ricky.

Man, I can't wait for the combine.

Did not visit us today, went to the Eagles for a tryout instead.

I almost wonder if the Patriots cancelled the visit once his agent sent out a tweet saying he would be visiting. The Pats usually like to keep this stuff under wraps and given that this is a borderline NFL player I suspect they figure they don't need to deal with an agent whose sending tweets about his clients visits.
