I'd agree. I give this article a big Meh.

With that in mind, I think the 2009 Pats definitely lacked identity. I'd like to see the following for 2010:

1. On offense, something like what the Saints have - a pass-oriented offense but with good running balance including integration of RBs into the passing game, and too many weapons to cover. A healthy Brandon Tate, a veteran 3rd WR, an all-purpose RB like CJ Spiller, and a RG replacement for Stephen Neal could make this an achievable goal.

2. On defense, a more attacking style while still being based on the 3-4. Solidifying the ILB position with a FA like Karlos Dansby or a rookie like Rolando McClain, plus a pass rusher or two, could go a long way to make implementing this possible.

CJ Spiller is my binky, but he may be gone long before our pick.

If the Pats stop giving 10-15 yard cushions on third down, I would be most appreciative. I swear, I felt more confident in the Pats' ability (not just this year, BTW) to stop 3rd-and-2 than to stop 3rd-and-15.

I also wonder how much the team will benefit from removing the main malignancy in the locker room (the guy who made the "Humble Pie" shirts two years ago).

Mike, really with the "identity" angle? There is NOTHING to be said for "identity" aside from fun fan sports talk keyword.

Agreed. I'm sick and tired of the 'bend but don't break' approach. Would like us to be much more aggressive on 3rd down (actually, all downs to be honest).

If we had the talent of the jets on defense, we would be more agreesive in our schemes.

They need to rush the passer much better than they have, and that means drafting and jumping into FA. I think they have to change their business model like everything else things change and evolve.

Bend but don't break was fine when it was winning...and it won a lot over an entire decade.

The mediots used to laud this team for it's ability to be chameleons. I think what it boils down to for the media is they like whatever is winning... Which is the classic kneejerk, frontrunner mentality. Great consistently successful HC's like Bill have the courage of their convictions because that is what got them there. Which fans and mediots believe is laudable when you win but somehow a character flaw when you don't...

What the JETS have accomplished to date says a lot more about the league and the teams they beat, including two who intentionally laid down for them to even allow them to make the playoffs (they were a .500 team absent that and should have finished the season at .500 or below) and two classically (and one consistently) overhyped, highly talented underachievers.
