Default Jets vs. Patriots offense and defensive rankings

Just how much better are the Jets on defense and offense then the Patriots through 3 weeks.........hmmm let's see...........

The Jets

PTS 21.3 (13th)

YDS 315.0 (21st)

PASS YDS 185.0 (25th)

RUSH YDS 130.0 (11th)

The Patriots

PTS 20.0 (17th)

YDS 395.0 (5th)

PASS YDS 287.0 (3rd)

RUSH YDS 108.0 (18th)

Now for the Big one defense..........

The Jets

PTS 11.0 (2nd)

YDS 256.0 (3rd)

PASS YDS 173.3 (6th)

RUSH YDS 82.7 (9th)

The Patriots

PTS 16.7 (7th)

YDS 262.3 (6th)

PASS YDS 174.0 (7th)

RUSH YDS 88.3 (10th)

Over the course of an entire season it's going to be interesting to see how both teams progress on O and D. The Patriots defense isn't as bad as most thought.

You know what they say about stats? Figures lie and liars figure. But I agree with you that our defense is better then they are given credit for.

The only problem with using points against to rank defenses is that it doesn't take into consideration points given up by the offense, as in the pick 6 versus Buffalo. That's 7 points counting against the defense when it shouldn't be. They have given up 18,16, and 10 points for a total of 44 (14.6) average.

I think the biggest stat is the 3rd down defense. It seems like the Pats have been awesome at that so far.

I laugh because the media acts like the Jets defense is the second coming of the 85 Bears defense. Nobody seems to notice the Patriots defense has done pretty well themselves minus all the yappin and "hey look at me" player wanting attention.

the numbers are working themselves out......the pats have been inefficient thus far.......bad red zone offense is what has this team at 2 and 1......

the jets have been getting the breaks early and have managed to stay 100% healthy.........every week there is a new roll of film on the jets and what they do......new orleans will provide the blueprint which the pats will be ready to follow in november

Take away the Brady INT for a TD and it is 14.3 PPG vs. 11.0. However, those stats don't tell the full story. For example, what is the Jets vs. Pats opposing QB rating? How many turnovers has each defense caused? The Jets defense has been much more disruptive, holding Matt Schaub to a 54.5% completion rate with a 55.9 QB rating and 0 TDs/1 INT; Tom Brady to a 49% completion rate with a 53.1 QB rating and 0 TDs and 1 INT; and Kerry Collins to a 40.5% completion rate with a QB rating of 41.5 with 1TD/2 INTs. In contrast, the Pats have allowed QB ratings of 114.1, 101.1 and 82.3, haven't had an INT, and haven't allowed an opposing QB to complete less than 60% of his passes.

The Pats defense is quite good, as you point out, and very underrated. I'm confident that with time it will become very good this season. But it has not been dominant the way the Jets' defense has, no matter how close the stats are. And I'm as big a homer as anyone.

I agree with you, the only stats that matter are wins and losses. Stats can get so distorted by game situations, especially when you're looking at only a few weeks. With that being said, yes I'm a Jet fan obviously, and I think the Pats are still the odds on favorite to win the division. I think the Jets D is gonna be extremely good, but the problem is we're starting a rookie quarterback. It's alot easier on a defense to have an offense that is gonna hold onto the ball, eat up clock, and give the D rest time. Sanchez is gonna continue to get better and I like him alot, but the Jets true defensive stats won't be until the team is balanced.

The Jets defense has peaked way too early. I don't see them playing any better than they already are; they simply don't have enough talent. Now, I'm not saying the Jets are going to stumble, but no way will they keep up that 11-point average. The Patriots defense has had hardly any time to gel, and they're still hot on the Jets' heels. I realize I sound like a broken record now, but the Patriots defense will be among the top 10 by the end of the season, at least as good (statistically, and statistics only mean so much come January) as the Jets.

If it wasn't obvious already, those numbers do point out one area of concern. No, not the pass/run ratio. When a team is 5th in yardage but only 17th in points - and isn't turning the ball over - it's obvious the red zone efficiency needs to improve. The Pats need to finish off drives with more touchdowns and less settling for field goals. It really hurt them in the Jets game, for example.

One thing I'd like to see is more snaps from under center in that area of the field. When they line up in the shotgun they're practically telling the opposing defense "we're going to pass" in those situations. Most defenses are expecting a run in those situations. I'm not saying the Pats should never pass when they're that close; just line up under center even if Brady does pass to keep them guessing.
