KEEPING IN TOUCH — [Head Coach Doug] Martin talks regularly with former Kent State quarterback Julian Edelman, the seventh-round NFL Draft pick, who officially signed his first pro contract with the New England Patriots last week.
“Julian and I talk quite often,” said Martin. “He is really excited, working hard and he has a real chance to make it. The Patriots have been working him at a lot of different spots, from slot wide receiver, to running back to returning kicks. He’s doing a lot of stuff in the kicking game.

Former Kent State quarterback signs on with New England

Former Kent State quarterback Julian Edelman signed a four-year, $1.7 million contract with the three-time Superbowl winning New England Patriots last week.
Edelman, who got a signing bonus of more than $48,000, was drafted by the team in the seventh round. He was the 232 pick overall.
While Edelman spent his college career as quarterback, he was signed as a wide receiver.
The 2009 alumnus left Kent State with a record-breaking 3,190 total yards in a single season. Edelman's name took the top spot from former quarterback and Cleveland Browns wide receiver Josh Cribbs in 2008.
In the 31 games Edelman played since becoming a Golden Flash in 2006, he threw for 40 touchdowns and ran for 22 more.
Before coming to Kent State as a sophomore, Edelman, who is originally from Redwood City, California, earned region MVP awards for his playing time at San Mateo Community College in California.
Edelman isn't the only former Kent State athlete at New England's mini camp. Former Kent State wrestler Jermail Porter is trying his hand at football. He has been attending the training camp in Foxboro, Massachusetts, but has not been signed.

You have to wonder what would have happened to Edelman if he'd been at a bigger college program with a more pro-style offense. At 5'11" 195 with incredible quickness and athleticism, he would almost surely have been converted to a WR/RB/KR/Something much earlier.
That's amazing. Amazing as in quicker than any WR prospect in years. As in quicker than DeSean Jackson. As in, at the Kent State pro day, the scouts asked Edelman to run the shuttle a second time because they couldn't believe that number was real, but it was. Now toss in the competitive drive and leadership that made him a QB to start with.
I love that kind of 7th round pick. Swing for the fences, why not?

Yeah, the sixth and seventh rounds seem to be a good place for the Pats to find underestimated talent. Thanks for the data; I had no idea! I think we'll be hearing a lot about this guy.

Also ran a 4.52- 40 which is bit on the slower for a prototypical WR, but if the plan is to run the same kind of routes that Welker does, he has that prerequisite speed, agility, skills and football smarts to really compete for a roster spot.

Yeah. Either he's catching passes here, or he'll be doing it in KC. . . .

Also ran a 4.52- 40 which is bit on the slower for a prototypical WR, but if the plan is to run the same kind of routes that Welker does, he has that prerequisite speed, agility, skills and football smarts to really compete for a roster spot.
Yep, he doesn't have dazzling straight-ahead speed, which contributed to his low draft status. The best physical comparison I can dredge up is Deion Branch:
