Default BJGE fined 5k for late hit

Patriots blog - Reiss' Pieces - Boston.com

Rookie RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis has been fined $5,000 by the NFL for a late hit on Rams CB Fakhir Brown in Sunday's 23-16 win over the Rams.

It was a late hit, the fine is understandable.

Then why wasn't it called by the crew working that night?

My problem with these fines for non-calls is that it seems like it is serving to undercut the authority of the refs. Basically, the NFL is saying that their crew missed some calls that should have been made. And there's now going to be a two-part refereeing process - one during the game and one afterwards. And while it is all nice and good to punish the offender afterwards, if I was an opposing fan, I'd be pissed that it wasn't called at the game. Either stand behind your refs' calls, or don't be surprised when people question the fairness of the refs' calls.

But it's not really a surprise coming from a billion-dollar industry that is so cheap it won't even pay for full-time refs.

Least we forget it is run by Roger "Jets" Goodell.

I disagree. Refs should do the best job they can. But sometimes they miss stuff.

If hit was a fineable offense then player should be fined even if the refs missed it. Otherwise the player gets away twice, instead of only once.

They want to fine someone, fine the guy that speared Cassel in the 4th QTR of the Bronco's game.

12:12 left in the 4th QTR - 3rd and 3 and Cassel scrambles up the left. The guy Led with his helmet and the hit was late as well.

Watch that and tell me how that dude does not get a mother of a fine.

I'm not trying to say that the NFL shouldn't try to crack down on the late roughness, but I'm not so sure they are going about it the right way. They should be doing all they can to get those calls made on the field, rather than seeming to create a second process after the fact and after the penalty may have affected the game.

What if you were a Seahawks fan and found out later that the NFL fined a bunch of Steelers for plays from that Super Bowl - calls that if made on the field would possibly have turned around the game. Wouldn't you feel like the NFL isn't doing everything they can to get the best refereeing on the field, during the game, that they possibly can?

I'm thinking a Seahawks fan, in this scenario, would have a lot more to say than that.

I was really surprised a flag wasn't thrown when that happened. But to fine him after the fact when the flag WASN'T tossed just doesn't seem right.

The refs are human they can miss things and if he makes a late hit then he should be fined.
If i walked up and stabbed you in the middle of a bar brawl but the cops were breaking up a six man brawl in the middle i got caught on tape would you want me to get away when there is evidence but no official sighting by a person of power?

No, but if the cops had cameras everywhere and a billion-dollar budget, I'd sure as hell wonder why there wasn't somebody watching the camera at the time who could help the cops on the ground get all of the attackers as it was happening. And while I'd be glad they eventually got the guy, I'd be really pissed if you stabbed someone else on your way out, while the cops in charge of the cameras were too busy counting their money.
