Physically Cassel has what you look for in a QB in this league but, like every player, he needs confidence to give him a chance to be succesful. He also needs to be 100% mentally and not looking over his shoulder at the new competition trying to take his job. So BB took the first step towards giving Cassel the best chance to succeed by not bringing in a veteran QB this past week, Cassel must take the next one on his own this Sunday.

Lombardi's next point, though, is one that most of us had already figured out:

While, for Cassel's sake, I don't think I want to see him end up with the Niners, you have to admit it would be funny as all get out if they started with the #1 QB in the draft, and their long-term starter ended up being a 7th rounder from the same draft.

One thing Cassel said that struck me was " I realized I could do it"
Thats a paraphrase but it says a lot he had no confidence in himself up until he threw a TD pass. IMO (and i've been one of his biggest bashers) is that if he can gain and maintain a little confidence he'll be more that adequate.

Well as a critic of Cassel when he was a backup I am shutting up. I want him to succeed and I want him to know that all the fans are behind him. I have always believed that the time for criticism of players is the offseason when the squad is being assembled. Now we are what we are and hopefully it will be enough. I think the way the organisation and BB have led the way is very impressive: compare it to Gruden's approach.

Look back at how the Tuna treated Bledsoe after he drafted him. He brought him along slowly, despite being the #1 pick in the Draft.

I had forgotten that Romo spent 3+ years before getting his chance to play. Romo played for Cupcake U, and needed to learn a high level
pro style Offense. Cassel sat but he learned at a pro-style big time college system run by a previous pro coach, Pete Carroll at USC. But he didn't get any snaps, unlike Romo.

Four years of learning and some play in preseason and mop- up action, should have him ready for his shot, at full time play.
Cassell is a a great, and big athlete. He was drafted twice as a pro-baseball pick at Pitcher.

That means he has a cannon for an arm. We all know that he is mobile and can run pretty well. We know he had a 40 Wonderlic, so he is not a dummy.

Belichick handled Brady well when he had to play after a year plus of seasoning. Then BB gave him game plans that slowly got more complex, as he learned. BB sending Simms and Rattay away, let Matt breathe a little a little sigh of relief. He doesn't have to constantly look over his shoulder.

Belichick is doing his QB coaching job. I'm Psyched.

You are kidding, right? I mean, I get the confidence angle - sure - but these are paid professional athletes. Grow some thicker skin - or a bigger pair. Gosh - who is he? Vince Young?

They're professional athletes, but they're human beings too. You might be the best trained surgeon in the world but if you start getting nervous when you're opening someone up I definitely don't want you operating on me. It's the way it is.
