Yeah, I think this has as much to do with toning down the level of antics. Sure, it's the off season but aside from Brady (who kind of can't escape it nowadays but caught on early to the need to manage or limit it) this team hasn't had a star the media focused on on or off the field. Guys were encouraged to keep the focus on team even in the off season and keep their personal image humble and relatively low key. At some point Gronk may become the face of the franchise for a time as the QB position transitions. They don't want that face to be the image of a frat boy who never grew up, however harmless the antics may (or ultimately may not) be. Even had that discussion with Drew back in the day (mosh pit). And Brady during his brief Tara reid period. Being a leader here often involves personal sacrifice, off as well as on the field. Setting a tone that may not be in your own comfort zone but doing so because it's what is best for the team. Ultimately they want guys who have that whatever it takes mentality, even if what it takes is toning down your personal lifestyle.
They should explore trading him then......they knew who he was when they extended him early by pats standards, and for them to start preaching now would be disingenuous which is why I believe they have done little to nothing.
Fact is they signed him early because they were afraid to lose him and really have zero leverage to put forth any kind of 'or else', which again makes me believe nothing was said by the pats.
That kind of thing may have worked in 2005, but they'd probably just get a shrug out of gronk. They can say what they want, but at the end of the day, they still have to write the checks even if gronk chooses to remain a frat boy

You don't have the slightest idea how professional sports organizations are run. You remind me of one of those who think that "no one can tell me what to do because I have rights, goddam it." You're clueless about how the real world works.
So tell me.....if they tell him to stop acting like frat boy and he says.....I'm not hurting anyone, I'm still going to have my off seasons the way I wish....what can the pats do?
What kind of feedback do you think he's getting from mankins who stood up to the org and wound up getting what he wanted?
What can the pats do besides cut him and pay him all his guaranteed money? He hasn't technically done anything wrong.
How much you wanna bet you'll see the same gronk at the end if next season?
You'd think the org would have addressed this at contract time.....fact is he's done nothing wrong despite stupid claims to the contrary

"...he's done nothing wrong..." is a relative phrase. He's done nothing wrong if he's a 23 year old who's working an entity which doesn't depend upon its public perception and reputation for its success or lack of same. The New England Patriots are a business organization which, supposedly, not only wins football games, but also has a brand to uphold. Look, I've laughed at Gronk's escapades and I think he's very likely a great person who likes living large and raising harmless hell like most guys his age. But, he doesn't have a job like most guys his age. The millions he gets paid are largely for what he does on the football field - but not entirely. Along with producing on the field, part of that money is also paid with the expectation and understanding that he will comport himself in a manner which doesn't embarrass the organization or himself when he's not on the field. You can bet your ass that Bob Kraft and Bill Belichick didn't tell Gronk when he signed, "We don't care what you do off the field as long as you're available on the field." I guarantee you that discussions were had about what they expected from him off the field and I also guarantee you that those discussions didn't include them saying that those expectations included it being fine with them to see him him posing with a porn star sporting his Patriots' uniform jersey, drinking shirtless on-stage in public and wrestling on stage with a twice-broken arm in a cast while clearly intoxicated. Honestly, your continually bleating and whining about Gronk's "rights" suggest that you have very little understanding about how the real world works. It must be nice to live in the enchanted kingdom. Grow the f*** up, for crissakes.

Even Mankins says he's a meathead... Players count on each other giving 110%. Guys who don't or who in any way jeopardize their teamates seasons find out that their teamates support evaporates when someone elses's behavior or performance adversely impacts their season or career...
And they can trade his ass because he doesn't have any guaranteed money beyond an $8M signing bonus which would count against the patscap which is chump change when it comes to sunk cost, especially if you get something in return. His deal was in it's own way the prove it deal of the two TE's... We know he's talented so it must be something else they are waiting for him to prove...
They could cut him at the end of 2014 and the dead cap would be $3.2M. They could trade him tomorrow and the dead cap would be $6.4M because the $4M in guaranteed salary he'd be owed between now and next season would become the responsibility of any team they traded him to.
Gronk's deal was set up with a $4.6M AAV in the first 4 years and a spike to $9M+ in the last 4. He's going to have to earn it. $18M between 2012 and 2015. $37M only if the option is exercised before the last day of the 2015 season...
It sounds as if the team has checked him or reigned him in again...hopefully this time it sinks in. Because I'm sure the last thing they'd ever want to do is be put in a position where they had to move on from him because the on field performance wasn't exceeding the off field hype.
Rosenhaus was a lousy choice of agent for a kid like Gronk. Drew sells the lifestyle and basks in the glow of the hype and does deals that don't necessarily do his clients any favors... Fortunately for Gronk he's part of an organization that sets a tone designed to offset bad advice.
Signing bonus
Gronkowski: $8 million
Hernandez: $12.5 million ($6 million up front, $3.25 million of March of 2013, and $3.25 million in March of 2014)
Base salaries
Gronkowski: $540,000 (2012), $630,000 (2013), $3.75 million (2014), $4.75 million (2015), $2.25 million (2016), $4.25 million (2017), $8 million (2018), $9 million (2019)
Hernandez: $540,000 (2012); $1.323 million (2013), $1.2 million (2014), $2.3 million (2015), $5 million (2016), $6 million (2017), $6 million (2018)
ANALYSIS: Gronkowski has a higher earning ceiling, which he can feel good about if he performs at a high level over the course of the deal. One key part of his contract is a $10 million option bonus the team can pick up on the final day of the 2015 league year. That activates the final four years of the contract. For Hernandez, his ceiling might not be as high, but he received more up-front bonus money and also has one less year on his contract. The deal for Hernandez looks more “real” in the sense that he could realistically play it out as it doesn’t have the volatile spike that Gronkowski’s does in the final two years when it comes to base salaries.

You REALLY should thank Jackson 2 and MoLewisrocks for indulging you with very thoughtful responses. Not that you did anything to deserve them.

Lots of words for a little speculation. Of course clowns like mo say what they say because BB and Brady are their gods, their supreme beings. Everything is by their design. Just look at his talk about dumping gronk....gronk wouldn't suffer as it would be his path to getting another huge chunk of guaranteed money. LOL at the notion.
I especially love mo's assumption that mankins was being negative about gronk or that gronks activities in feb construe a player who doesn't give it his all. Extreme stupidity is what that is
