Jerod Mayo was relieved as head Coach of the Patriots by Robert Kraft 90 minutes after the Patriots won their final game versus the Buffalo Bills.
Here in New England, we’ve been a little used to hearing about internal dysfunction, and it sounds like the final month leading up to Jerod Mayo’s departure yesterday wasn’t exactly great.
The Patriots lose by winning the game against the Bills. Immediately after the game Robert Kraft fired Jerod Mayo. Alex Van Pelt has also been relieved of his duties as Offensive Coordinator. By winning the game the Patriots moved from having the #1 selection in the draft and dropping to the 4th Overall selection.
Patriots owner Robert Kraft and son Jonathan wasted little time on Sunday night, firing first-year head coach Jerod Mayo barely a couple of hours removed from Sunday’s regular season finale 23-16 victory over the Buffalo Bills at Gillette Stadium.
Jerod Mayo said following Sunday’s win over the Bills that he would be speaking to the Krafts tomorrow in what he said would be his normal meeting before seeing “where it goes from there.”
It appears, we know what the future will hold a little sooner than we thought.
“Because they have every right to do that,(boo) in my opinion. It’s professional sports. If you don’t want to (hear) that, go coach in Alaska”
With the talk obviously swirling about the situation with New England Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo, Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer believes that the issues facing the team extend beyond its head coach.
Patriots offensive lineman Cole Strange has had a long year, and it sounds like he earned some recognition for his efforts on Friday.
Since we just did a preview of the Bills two weeks ago, writing a preview of them again would be a waste of time and effort. Instead, I will concentrate on the significance of the game.
When you’re 3-13 heading into the final weekend of the season, it probably shouldn’t be surprising that you don’t garner much attention when the NFL decides to make its Pro Bowl selections.
Heading into the final game of the 2024 regular season, the Patriots find themselves in a situation where there’s little to play for, and one goal in mind before this year comes to a close.
” We just didn’t play well enough in any phase of the game. No complementary football. That’s what you get.” — Jerod Mayo
The Patriots come home to finish off the season with a pair of games against quality, playoff bound teams. This Saturday, the Patriots host the Los Angeles Chargers. The Chargers are under the guidance of 1st year Head Coach Jim Harbaugh. He has them playing very tough despite a rash of injuries.
Jonathan Jones deserved a game-ball for his work in this game, covering the Bills’ most explosive player, Khalil Shakir, who was in the slot.
The Bills clearly came into this one flat and didn’t expect much of a fight from the Patriots out in Western New York on Sunday.
The Patriots came to play today, and the players left it all on the field today. They stunned Buffalo with a quick start and a 14-0 lead and dominated the 1st Quarter, allowing Buffalo just 3 minutes of possession on 6 plays for just 11 yards.
“Yeah, I feel for Bar,” (Christian Barmore) Mayo said during his Friday press conference at Gillette Stadium. “He did everything right:
This week the Patriots face their division rival Buffalo Bills in Orchard Park. The Bills are contenders for the AFC championship and are playing very good football coming down the stretch.
Maye completed 19 of 23 passes overall for 202 yards with an average of 8.8 yards per pass with a TD and an INT for a passer rating of 99.6.
It’s hard to watch the Patriots play this poorly. They had a week off to prepare for this game and this is what they put on the field! I’m talking about the players and the coaches, not showing up to play. That’s not all the players, as many played well including Drake Maye. Others like Vederian Lowe should have stayed in bed. I also blame Jerod Mayo for not giving Lowe the hook after he looked like a turnstile in the 1st Quarter.
For a team that was coming off a bye, the Patriots looked grossly underprepared, badly disorganized, and outclassed after they took the field for the first time in two weeks on Sunday out in Arizona.
Fair or not, it falls on Maye to get it done in the red zone. But AVP has to get creative and loosen things up for the rookie quarterback.
Coming off the bye week the Patriots travel West to play the 6-7 Arizona Cardinals. The Cards enter the game with the #12 ranked Overall Offense with 348 yards a game. Passing they rank 22nd with 208.2 yards a game and Rushing they are #6 with 139.8. In the Red Zone they convert at a 51.2% rate which is 24th in the league. On Third Down they convert at a 40.4% which is 11th in the league.
Here we are at the bye week, and I am going to look back on the previous 13 weeks and report on what I have seen. The Bye Week is coming so late in the season that it really won’t help that much. The team looked tired against the Colts, especially on Defense. All teams have bumps and bruises over the course of the season, and that has built up for the Patriots over a longer period without a break.
” But as long as our focus is on setting a foundation and getting better every week, I feel pretty good about it.” – Jerod Mayo
