Day 2 of Joint Practices with the Eagles was very physical on both sides with the Patriots coming out with a slight advantage (like 55-45).  That’s a good Defense the Patriots played against and they played slightly better.

You knew the Eagles would come out smoking, and their pride wouldn’t let them accept what happened to them on Wednesday to continue.  The Eagles Offensive line is one of the best in the league and Vrabel challenged the Patriots Defense and they came up big again, especially against the run.  All in all, I was very pleased by the results of these two practices.  Lots to like.

Attendance

Absent: CB Christian Gonzalez, ED Xavier Holmes, OL Ben Brown, FB Reggie Gilliam (new), CB Channing Canada (new)

Limited: OG Greg Van Roten, OT Morgan Moses, Christian Ellis, Craig Woodson

S Craig Woodson did not take part in team. Dell Pettus and John Saunders split his spot.

PUP/NFI: ED Harold Landry III, S Brenden Schooler (Schooler was seen on the field after practice signing autographs- MM)

Passing

11v11s

Practice Reports & Notes

-Eagles were more competitive today. Most plays were in the red zone. There were several scuffles – Mark Daniels

Play of the Day – Top highlight from a competitive back-and-forth full-team red-zone drill: WR A.J. Brown physical at the catch point against CB Quinyon Mitchell to bring in the Drake Maye pass in the end zone … and then Brown turns to the crowd and roars with emotion. Eagles’ D making it tough. – Mike Reiss

AJ Brown one handed catch back on the end zone. 1-1. -Savage

Pop Douglas wins again over the middle against Cooper DeJean (Douglas owned Dejean yesterday in practice too-MM)

Kyle Williams shakes his defender at the line of scrimmage and gets open for a touchdown on a quick slant. – Theo Diesenhaus

Romeo Doubs over Eagles CB Ambry Thomas – Meghan Ottolini

Maye missed Boutte twice in 1-1 – Savage

A.J. Brown Quinyon Mitchell Round 2: One hand and two feet for Brown. – Brian Hines

“And one” for Kyle Williams. Held by Keele Ringo and still manages to score. – Theo Diesenhaus

WR Efton Chism III with the sideline awareness/control in the end zone (TD). – Mike Reiss

11-on-11’s: Drake Maye tries AJ Brown deep against Quinyon Mitchell again. Ball falls incomplete, buts the refs toss a flag on Mitchell. – Andrew Guidon

Marcus Jones picks off his second pass in as many days off a tipped pass Milton Williams was also in the backfield – Taylor Kyles

Marcus Jones pick 6 on Jaylen Hurts – Savage

Jalen Hurts threw three picks in 7×7. Now he has one early in 11×11 red zone. – Henry McKenna

Some early pushing and shoving today. Rhamondre Stevenson ran hard into Cooper DeJean on the third rep of 11-on-11s, and Alijah Vera-Tucker delivered an extra shot to an Eagles defender who took exception. – Zack Cox

Tommy DeVito sacked in his first snap of 11’s – Theo Diesenhaus

Tariq Woolen was all over AJ Brown on a slant, but Maye’s receiver comes back to the ball and secures the catch. – Andrew Guidon

Patriots starting defense 1st reps in 11v11:

– Jacas/M. Williams run stuff on Barkley to left edge

– Williams pressure, Marcus Jones tip drill INT

– Hurts incomplete deep

– Hurts complete to Dallas Goedert

– Jacas took first 2 reps over Elijah Ponder, who checked in for last 2 – Matt Doloff

I had Dontayvion Wicks with a drop from Jalen Hurts just now in 11×11 red zone. Should’ve been a nice catch and run.

Dontayvion Wicks. Wicked shimmy – Henry McKenna (beat Carlton Davis badly TD -MM)

Looked like Elijah Ponder had a would-be sack on Jalen Hurts. Tough to tell with Hurts scrambling, but Ponder flew into the backfield quickly and hesitated in an effort not to hit the quarterback. – Andrew Guindon

On the first play the Patriots ran from the ~7, Drake Maye finds Mack Hollins for a touchdown.  – Theo Diesenhaus

On a play called dead due to a penalty, Romeo Doubs and a DB got wrapped up to grab a pass after the whistle. Doubs sat for a second, taking his helmet off. He walked off but quickly came back in for another play. – Andrew Guindon

Tough 1-on-1 period for Caleb Lomu. Rookie OT had two decisive losses vs. AJ Epenesa while playing on the left side. – ZackCox

Eagles CB Quinyon Mitchell just allowed two TDs in a red zone period. One to Patriots WR A.J. Brown. One to Mack Hollins.- Theo Diesenhaus

Quinyon Mitchell was plastered to A.J. Brown in the red zone. I was a clear no-throw look. Drake Maye said: f- it. Tossed it up. Brown fought back for the ball and a 10-yard touchdown. – Henry McKenna

Hassan Haskins scores on an inside run. Pushed his way into the EZ. – Theo Diesenhaus (From what I have heard Haskins is bullying his way into the 3rd RB lead- MM)

Kyle Williams was open, but DeVito didn’t see him. Was forced to throw the ball away. – Theo Diesenhaus

A few positives from Jalen Hurts in 11×11 red zone: a TD to Dallas Goedert and a pair of QB runs that clearly went for x-plays. – henry McKenna (The Patriots 2nd team D had trouble with Richadson running and now with Hurts.  Will need to tighten that up especially against Allen – MM)

A.J. Brown caught all seven of his targets in team drills yesterday, and he’s hot again today. His first three targets in 11s resulted in a DPI on Quinyon Mitchell, a catch vs. Riq Woolen and a contested TD vs. Mitchell. – Zack Cox (Oh what a motivated AJ Brown can do – MM)

Drake Maye finds Romeo Doubs in the back of the end zone. Impressive toe tap by Doubs for the touchdown. Launched the ball 20-yards in celebration. – Theo Diesenhaus

There’s a lot more extracurricular activity today between the Eagles and Patriots. It’s taking a while to break up scrums. There have been a lot of them. Trash talk and shoving. But no major escalation. – Henry McKenna

Drake Maye trying to find AJ Brown is picked off by Riq Woolen, who runs 100 yards to the opposite end zone and summersaults. – Theo Diesenhaus

Excellent red zone throw and catch from Maye to Doubs in the red zone for a TD. That’s followed by a pick of Maye by Woolen. Great end to end action this morning. – Chris Price

Philly’s defense has stepped it up to start practice today. Drake Maye feeling some pressure in the middle of the pocket, especially from Jordan Davis. – Evan Lazar

Marcus Jones is having himself a day. That’s two interceptions now in practice. – Mark Daniels

The Patriots move the pocket and Tommy DeVito hits Efton Chism for a TD. – Theo Diesenhaus

Tommy DeVito naked bootleg! Fakes everyone out and takes it in himself for the touchdown. – Theo Diesenhaus

Corey Durden would be sack on Jalen Hurts. And a legit fight breaks out. – Savage (I expected this to happen after the way the Patriots dominated yesterday’s practice.  Eagles are pushing back – MM)

Marcus Jones was swinging and jawing with a Philly WR and that led to a dustup that emptied the benches: – Chris Price

Cory Durden and Elijah Ponder sacks of Jalen Hurts on consecutive snaps with another skirmish in between. – Andrew Callahan

Kyle Williams caught a 30- yard touchdown from Tommy DeVito – Mark Daniels

Tommy DeVito throws a go ball down the left sideline for a ~40- yard touchdown to Kyle Williams. Shaun Wade was in coverage. – Evan Lazar

The Patriots’ second-team wideouts are having a hard time separating from the Eagles’ backup DBs. Tommy DeVito is 2-for-9 in red-zone 11-on-11s with a couple of PBUs. But the starters have had the edge over Philly’s top CBs through 1.5 practices. Drake Maye 6-for-10 with three TDs and one INT thus far today.

Much better results here outside of the red zone. DeVito just hit Kyle Williams with a deep-ball TD down the left sideline. Beat ex-Patriots CB Shaun Wade. – Zack Cox

Not sure they were quite full speed today, more like first three steps, but I watched the Patriots O-Line in 1-on-1s: – Will Campbell split two reps vs. Hunt – Lomu split two reps vs. Epenesa – Crownover was 3-0. Nice day for him. – Evan Lazar

Drake Maye gets intercepted for the second time as the ball pops out of AJ Brown’s hands and goes to Jalyx Hunt. Hunt made a nice play diving for the ball – Mark Daniels

Crazy play: Drake Maye hits A.J. Brown. Riq Woolen immediately rips it out and Jalyx Hunt pulls it down for an INT. – Doug Kyed

Elijah Ponder just chased Jalen Hurts out of the pocket and Carlton Davis squeezed Hollywood Brown to the back of the EZ for an incompletion – Taylor Kyles

Jalen Hurts finds Hollywood Brown in the back of the end zone to finish off his 45-second drill. Kindle Vildor in coverage. – Theo Diesenhaus

Cory Durden appeared to draw a hold on a would-be Eagles TD – Taylor Kyles

DL Cory Durden draws a holding penalty on the 2-point conversion. A much different story for the Eagles at the close of this practice. – Andrew Callahan

The Patriots’ second 45-second drill went as follows: Short completion to Pop Douglas, incompletion to Doubs down the left sideline, incompletion to Mack Hollins on a corner route, touchdown to Romeo Doubs on a post. – Theo Diesenhaus

Gabe Jacas, Joshua Farmer, and Leonard Taylor just put the pocket in Andy Dalton’s lap – Taylor Kyles

Great PBU from Dial in red zone work (On Eagles 45 second drill – MM)

Tommy DeVito finds Kayshon Boutte for a touchdown. A great back shoulder ball from DeVito and an even better catch. – Theo Diesenhaus

Initial reaction after Day 2 of Patriots-Eagles practice: Philly turned it up compared to Wednesday; a day to highlight the fine line QB Drake Maye walks with WR A.J. Brown from the “he’s open even when covered” standpoint. Maye had 2 INTs throwing to Brown in tight windows. – Mike Reiss

Strong finish from Kayshon Boutte. He caught a contested TD from Tommy DeVito and drew an end-zone DPI on the final two reps of practice. – Zack Cox (Houston are you reading this? -MM)

Patriots-Eagles Day 2 joint practice notes, focused on Patriots offense:

– Drake Maye 9/18, 4 TDs, 2 INTs in 11s, Tommy DeVito 8/17, 3 TDs in 11s

– Each top offense had a TD and missed 2pt in two-minute situation.

– A.J. Brown beat Quinyon Mitchell three times in 2-on-2s and again for a TD in 11s. Mitchell won their one 1-on-1 battle

– Tommy DeVito hit Kyle Williams for a long TD over Shaun Wade.

– Others receiving TDs: Mack Hollins, A.J. Brown, Romeo Doubs x2, Efton Chism, Kayshon Boutte

– Not a ton of room for the Patriots’ running backs, though Rhamondre Stevenson hit a big hole for a big gain. Hasaan Haskins scored a rushing TD.

– Lots of time for Caleb Lomu at RT. Allowed a sack in 11s – Doug Kyed

Two really great days of work for the Patriots. Great action. – Chris Price

After some inconsistencies in the red zone today, Drake Maye highlighted that as an area where the Pats still have work to do. – Chad Graff (post practice Interview with Maye)

The Patriots defense held up noticeably better against the run in Thursday’s joint practice. Eagles tackle Jordan Mailata had an interesting explanation for that. “We weren’t effective today because we decided to put the boxing gloves on.” – Chris Mason (That’s right Mailata, don’t give credit to the Patriots.  How about just playing football and not boxing.  He blames the extracurriculas after the plays as breaking the Eagles momentum.  It was the Eagles initiating the extra roughness – MM)

Day 2 of joint practices between the Patriots and Eagles was a physical affair. After one brief skirmish on Wednesday, multiple small fights broke out during Thursday’s practice. – Mark Daniels  (I expected the Eagles to be nasty today and they were.  They got their asses handed to them on Wednesday – MM)

Doubs caught a contested touchdown with Woolen in coverage. He led all Patriots players with three receptions on four targets. Doubs has been fantastic to end training camp, making a highlight-reel catch every day. – Mark Daniels

“I feel like every time we get on the field, we’re trying to be aggressive,” Marcus Jones said. “That’s the only way you can make turnovers is by being aggressive and violent, which we always talk about, and then always make the plays that you need to make.” – Mark Daniels (Jones had two INTs in this practice – MM)

“Jared Wilson really had a good couple of days which is good to see. Morgan Moses was good. Caleb Lomu struggled a little bit today gave up a couple of pressures when he came in for Moses with the ones.” – Alex Barth

Comings and Goings

Andrew Rupcich was waived by the Patriots with an injury settlement today.  That means once he is recovered from the injury, he is free to resign with the Patriots or any other team he may choose.  This is similar to the Waived/Injured with an injury settlement the Patriots did with Terrell Jennings on Saturday.

NFL Fines Saints and Cowboys for Multiple Fights

“The NFL has confirmed that the Cowboys and Saints have each been fined $500,000 for the actions that took place at the joint practice between the teams earlier this week”. – Ian Rappaport
