Patriots Trade Polk To Saints, Ending His Disappointing Tenure in New England

It appears the New England Patriots aren’t finishing revamping their wide receiver room, with the club making a move on Saturday to thin things out a bit ahead of next offseason.
According to NFL Insider Dianna Russini, the Patriots are trading injured wide receiver Ja’Lynn Polk to the New Orleans Saints. Russini reports that the deal involves the former Washington receiver and a 2028 7th round selection, with New England receiving a 2027 6th round pick in return.
The move caps a disappointing rookie campaign where Polk caught just 12 passes on 33 targets for 87 yards and a touchdown in 2024. He started out catching five of his first six in his first three games including his touchdown, but his struggles began, and he caught just 7 of his next 27 targets, including catching just one pass over the course of the final seven games of last season.
Coming into this summer, the former 2024 second-round selection had made it clear he was on a mission to prove his doubters wrong, and had some moments where he did flash in camp. However, that effort was inconsistent, and there were questions prior to when he got hurt about his future with the football team.
Polk had been placed on season-ending injured reserve following a shoulder injury he sustained this preseason against the Washington Commanders. The injury came on a running play where Polk tried to stiff-arm a defender, but his left arm got caught underneath him as he was being taken down.
He came off the field favoring his shoulder, which was the same one he had surgically repaired last offseason.
The injury had seemingly bought him another offseason, but it looks like the team instead explored some options and took a deal to move him, which ends his disappointing brief tenure with the team.
Polk becomes the second player traded from that 2024 draft class, with the Patriots having previously traded quarterback Joe Milton to the Dallas Cowboys this offseason.
His departure will be one that will be lamented for years to come, as the club did trade back at the time, sending their 34th overall selection to the Chargers, which Los Angeles used to select fellow rookie Chargers wide receiver Ladd McConkey. The former Georgia receiver became the player New England had hoped they were getting in Polk, as McConkey went on to appear in 16 games, including 14 starts, catching 82 passes for 1149 yards and 7 touchdowns.
New England then took Polk with the 37th overall selection, and the deal also saw them move up 27 slots from round five into round four (#110) overall, which became the selection used to take UCF receiver Javon Baker.
Polk’s trade now thins out a 2024 Patriots Draft class that has just first-round pick Drake Maye, third-round tackle Caedan Wallace, and sixth-round pick Marcellus Dial remaining. The team previously moved on from fourth-round offensive lineman Layden Robinson and seventh-round tight end Jaheim Bell this summer.
Dial played every game on special teams last season and had a great preseason, appearing poised to grab a spot on the cornerback depth chart. Unfortunately, he suffered a torn ACL this preseason that ended his sophomore campaign, but he does remain a player who should be a factor moving forward. Wallace made the initial 53-man roster, but aside from being a depth player, his status for the long-term remains a question mark.
Meanwhile, Baker initially made the team, and had been someone that Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel had both supported and talked up all summer. There was some doubt about whether or not Baker would make the team, given what was a crowded receiver room. However, his performance this preseason on special teams seemed to make a big enough impact that the former UCF standout survived the initial cuts.
Unfortunately for Baker, he was later waived shortly after as the club continued tweaking its roster, and the reports indicated New England had planned on bringing him back to the practice squad.
Instead, Baker opted to join the Eagles. Given how much support he had from Vrabel and the fact he doesn’t have the same relationship with the coaching staff there, it remains to be seen whether or not he might regret that decision.
For now, the Patriots are currently preparing for the Miami Dolphins, who they’ll take the field against on Sunday at 1:00pm at Hard Rock Stadium.

It’s disturbing to see a 2nd round draft gone after playing one partial season (2024), and for essentially nothing accept the drop of a 2nd rounder’s salary off the books. I assume Polk’s shoulder injury is a go-forward issue and concern that rendered his value so low. You could see the guy had talent last summer. It’s certainly to early to gauge and condemn a kid on his rookie year wherein he was playing while on the injured list in 2024. Injurys happen sure and typically they are no one’s fault per se.
