ESPN INSIDER on Kupp’s Destination: “I’m going to go with the New England Patriots”

The Patriots will most definitely be on the lookout for some wide receiver help this offseason, and one ESPN analyst has one name picked out to potentially end up in Foxboro in 2025.

Harry Douglas appeared on SportsCenter on Monday, looking at the future for several NFL wideouts and where they might be headed this offseason.  Douglas believes that when it comes to Kupp, the Patriots are the likely landing spot for the Rams wide receiver.

“I’m going to go with the New England Patriots who have some cap space to work with,” said Douglas.  “When you look at the quarterback, Drake Maye, he’s a young, promising prospect, and I like the way he played in this rookie season the time he was out there playing.  But when you look at Cooper Kupp, a guy that’s sure-handed, reliable, can be an extension to the coaching staff on the football field, very smart, a Super Bowl champion, and a quarterback’s best friend.”

“So I’m going with Cooper Kupp to the New England Patriots, and Drake May would be very happy as well.”

Kupp is expected to be among several players the Patriots could target this offseason, with Cincinnati’s Tee Higgins as another name who some also believe will end up in Foxboro.  One issue with both players is the fact that each could potentially require giving up draft capital to make a deal, which would complicate things.  The Bengals are rumored to be placing the franchise tag on Higgins, which would keep him from hitting free agency and also require compensation from whoever tries to acquire him.

Given all their other needs, parting with a potential draft pick is something the Patriots probably aren’t keen on doing, especially for a team that is trying to build a young nucleus around Maye on both sides of the football.

However, a trade could also work to their advantage given that it does allow them to possibly have a little more leverage, perhaps preventing them from being spurned in free agency the way they were last March.

For now, the Patriots likely have a few scenarios in mind and with the Scouting Combine upcoming and the legal tampering period not far behind, we’ll probably start to hear some of the whispers on what those might be in the coming weeks.

When a team like LA doesn’t really have a young stud to take Kupps place in their top 2 guys (Nacua is one), and they are still committed to releasing him, that tells you something about where the player is currently at in terms of ability. Kupp was really good ~3 years ago. He’s got name recognition for the media articles, as does Hopkins, Diggs. There’s reasons those two (Hopkins, Diggs) are perpetual FAs as well: divas, club house cancers and they are not far from NFL retirement per decline. Kupp may help here for a year or so, but… Read more »
