53-Man Roster Analysis

I had 48 of the 50 players I named, make the final 53.  The big surprise was RB Kevin Harris getting cut. I can see that he is redundant to Stevenson and Gibson as all three are big backs.  Harris lacks breakaway speed.  His pass catching ability is greatly improved as evident by his TD catch and run against Washington, but that was not enough to save him.

The other one I got wrong was Edge William Bradley-King getting cut.  I thought he showed enough to make the team.

I am surprised that CB Marcellas Dial made the team, as it must be on his Special Teams value as a gunner on the Punt coverage team.  The Patriots were the #1 rated Special Teams group in the Pre-season.

Michael Jordan was kept probably as insurance with the Sidy Sow injury.  Sow’s status still should be monitored.

They also kept 7 Wide Receivers including Kashon Boutte, KJ Osborn and Jalen Reagor.   Reagor has Special Teams Kick Off value and they may be rewarding Osborn as a free agent that chose to come here and signed with the team.  Boutte didn’t play at all on Sunday but I still had him making the team.

Calvin Anderson and Armon Watts were put on IR.  Christian Barmore and Marte Mapu were put on IR and are Designated For Return.  The question remains if Barmore is designated as a Non-Football Injury or straight IR.  If it is NFI, the team does not have to pay him.

We will see how the roster shakes out after the waiver claims are announced tomorrow at noon.

We will see how the roster shakes out after the waiver claims are announced tomorrow at noon.  Here are some names of players the team may be interested in:

OL Ja’Tyre Carter (G/T)

DT Albert Huggins

TE Shane Zylstra

TE CJ Uzomah

NT Marguan McCall

TE EJ Jackson

Unrestricted Free Agents

WR Donovan Peoples – Jones

WR Tim Patrick

WR Terrance Marshall

Morse’s Morsels

Brandon Thorn of Trench Warfare has Patriots Layden Robinson rated as the #5 Rookie Offensive Lineman in the Pre-season.  Upon further review after a tough start in the Commanders game, Robinson was dominant.  He led all rookies with 10 pancake blocks.  Also need to give props to Caeden Wallace who played the entire 2nd half against the Commander and gave up only one hurry.

CBS Sports is hyping a possible trade between the Patriots and Cowboys that will send Jon Jones to fill in for DaRon Bland while he is out for at least half the season.  No mention of what the compensation would be, but sites Jones age (30) and that he is a Free Agent next year as the reasons for the trade.

Bill Belichick was on the Pat McAfee show this week and called Massachusetts “Taxachusetts” as another contributing factor as why Free Agents won’t sign here.  The Millionaires Tax of 4% needs to be factored into the offers they are making.  They have to make the offers the norm as a “Suck Tax” because of their unsure QB situation, 1st year Head Coach, 1st Year Offensive Coordinator, 1st Year Offensive Line coach and the uncertainty surrounding the O-line as a whole.  The agents are adding that 4% Tax into their calculations when deciding on which offer to take.  Do you really want a player to come here that is only coming only because of the money?

Jerod Mayo has still not named a starting QB yet.  I hope that it is Brissett, even though he has not looked good in any of the Pre-season games.

“Do you really want a player to come here that is only coming only because of the money?” Playing for the Patriots isn’t as attractive as it used to be. The military and many other organizations have cost-of-living adjustments to their pay. Nothing wrong with that. Do you really want to lose players by not offering them as much net pay as another team?

yup. So in a career that lasts only a few years for most, you go for the money. That’s what most do. Nothing wrong with that. And if a player is in their prime like an Aiyuk and has many good offers, well then they may want to live geographically in a certain area, and some may want to go to a competitor, and so what. They earned the right to choose no? The press tries to slant anyone that doesn’t want to go to NE as negative, but many didn’t want to come here when the pats were winning… Read more »
