BREER: Patriots Jack Jones Taking a Significant Financial Hit Starting 2023 on IRPaul Rutherford-USA TODAY Sports

While the situation with Jack Jones continues to get more interesting after he managed to avoid any jail time following the news of his weapons charges being dropped, it looks like things aren’t starting off well from a football standpoint.

With the timing of his hamstring injury, which appears to have Jones set to start the year on injured reserve, Albert Breer was asked on NBC Sports Boston about the fact it looked a little suspicious. Breer revealed that there is a financial hit the second-year New England Patriots defensive back will be taking starting off the season on the sidelines.

“Well, there’s an interesting nuance in Jack Jones’ contract that would say that whether or not he’s punished here, he’s going to feel the brunt of this,” explained Breer.  “He has what’s called an injury split in his rookie contract.  Well, what does that mean?  That means if he starts the season on injured reserve, the Patriots can lower his salary while he’s on injured reserve from $870,000 to $475,000.  So, roughly split that salary in half.”

“What’s interesting about this is, if they had carried him on the roster today, they couldn’t have done that to him.  He would have been on the roster at $875,000, and he would have been collecting game checks, as such, as long as he was out and then obviously coming back in.  Now, the Patriots can basically dock him $22,000 per week.  That means, he should lose a minimum of $88,000 being on injured reserve for the four weeks, that’s the minimum, and then lose another $22,000 a week on top of that for every week he misses beyond the four weeks.”

“So, just an interesting nuance here if you want to look at this and how it might affect Jack Jones.  Certainly, you can look at the monetary impact here and there is going to be one based on how his contract is structured.”

Most people certainly recall what ended up being a contentious finish to the 2022 season after Jones found himself being suspended internally by the club due to issues during his rehabilitation, although Bill Belichick did say this offseason that all of that “was in the past” and that they were moving forward.  That was, of course, prior to the former Arizona State standout getting arrested ahead of training camp.

What happens from here should be interesting to follow, but this latest news could possibly complicate things between Jones and the team, which will certainly be something to watch as it all ultimately plays out.
