Josh McDaniels Expects Bill O’Brien Will Do A “Great Job” Back In New England

🕑 Read Time: 2 minutes

Former Patriots offensive coordinator and current Las Vegas Raiders head coach Josh McDaniels shared glowing remarks about his New England successor Bill O’Brien.

Speaking at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis Tuesday, McDaniels explained why he believes O’Brien will have success during his second stint as offensive coordinator 12 years after his first.

“I think he’s a great coach,” McDaniels said. “Billy’s worked with a lot of quarterbacks before, and they’ve all had success, and he’s impacted all of those guys in a positive way. He knows the position really well, understands the league, and understands how to get the most out of players at this level. He’ll do a great job.”

Between 2007 and 2008 both coaches were on the same Bill Belichick coaching staff.

“Billy was one of those guys where, when we added Billy back in 2007, he was a guy who came from college and really wanted to make it in the NFL,” McDaniels continued. “So it was apparent right away how hard he worked, how smart he was, and you could give him a lot of responsibility and he could handle it. All the things that Billy has accomplished and achieved since then haven’t surprised me at all. Being successful as a coordinator in New England, winning at Penn State, winning in Houston, going down to Alabama, and being part of their success there, none of that has surprised me.

“He’s a great football coach, extremely hard worker. I have a lot of confidence that Billy’s going to do well wherever he’s at, and obviously, now that’s in New England.

The Patriots’ offense went backward in 2022 after losing McDaniels to the Raiders. The experiment of Matt Patricia and Joe Judge in his place ultimately failed. As a result, the team acted fast in luring O’Brien away from his most recent position at the University of Alabama.

With O’Brien back in the fold, the Patriots are banking on McDaniels’ prediction coming true and a bounceback year for quarterback Mac Jones, who should benefit from O’Brien’s experience and play calling.
