Who Did the Patriots Cut Today? Following Final Roster Cut Results
Winslow Townson-USA TODAY Sports
It’s been a busy afternoon, but there has been a flurry of moves along with a few surprises:
According to various reports, this is who the New England Patriots have parted ways with so far, although it’s possible we could see one or more of them back on the practice squad before the dust settles:
– Devin Asiasi – TE
– Jalen Wydermyer – TE
– Matt Sokol – TE
– Terrence Mitchell – CB
– Justin Bethel – CB
– Kevin Harris – RB
– J.J. Taylor – RB
– Josh Hammond – WR
– Tre Nixon – WR
– Lil’Jordan Humphrey – WR
– Henry Anderson – DE
– Nate Weiland – LB
– Harvey Langi – LB
– Cameron McGrone – LB
– William Sherman – OL
– Yasir Durant – OL
– James Ferentz – OL
– Arlington Hambright – OL
– Drew Desjarlais – OL
– Bill Murray – OL
– Jeremiah Pharms Jr – DT
– Kody Russey – OL
– Brad Hawkins – S
– LaBryan Ray – DT
– Tristan Vizcaino – K
Some quick thoughts:
– Asiasi’s release is disappointing as he had a good camp but his absence at the end likely didn’t help his cause, which basically will now see him join Dalton Keene as the second wasted 3rd round pick from the 2020 draft to not work out with the club.
– Mitchell got off to a good start in camp but he fell off as several players around him began to step up as the preseason progressed.
– Considering the crowded group around him, Harris’ cut wasn’t necessarily a surprise but it’s still disappointing. He really had a strong preseason and the way he broke through tackles and the power he showed really was impressive. The concern now will be whether or not any other teams took notice of him to keep him from clearing waivers and potentially keeping the Patriots from having an opportunity to get him back on the practice squad.
– Nixon falls into the same category as a high-energy special teams player who is a decent wideout and could potentially draw interest elsewhere. It would be great to get him back on the practice squad, but it might be a nail-biter this time around. His biggest issue was he started off strong but drops in key situations saw his stock drop and he was never able to maintain the same pace that both Kristian Wilkerson and even Humphrey showed. But he’s still come a long way since last year and it’s possible another team considers him.
– Taylor had a good preseason but he fell victim to a numbers game, which could also be an indication that Ty Montgomery avoided disaster and won’t miss much time. However, it should be interesting to see if Taylor also returns.
We’ll update this in a bit as the team continues to get down to the 53-man roster limit.
