Well if you were late to work in Boston today, you may have to blame your favorite football team.

On Monday, Boston traffic reporters caught the New England Patriots team buses being escorted north up the Southeast Expressway (I-93) to Logan Airport by the Massachusetts State Police during the morning commute.

Traffic stopped on 93 as #Patriots buses are escorted to the airport. The team is headed to Kansas City for tonight's game. @RochieWBZ reports everything is on track for them to play tonight… "last hurdle will be PCR test results which will come later on today" @wbz pic.twitter.com/1F6rK3zV8b

According to MA State Police spokesman Dave Procopio, the traffic delay was minimal and is part of a “regular, longstanding detail” agreement with the team.

“The escort of the Patriots’ buses is a regular, longstanding detail paid for by the team to ensure secure transit to the airport, similar to any other paid detail escort for motorcades or specialized material transports,” said Procopio to CBS Boston. “Because we make every effort to minimize disruption to motorists, today’s escort necessitated a lane closure that lasted only approximately three minutes.”

The Patriots matchup with the Kansas City Chiefs was postponed to Monday night following Cam Newton’s positive COVID-19 test.

The team would depart for Missouri on two separate planes Monday morning, with one flight from Boston Logan and the other out of TF Green Airport in Warwick, Rhode Island, the teams usual airport.

By traveling to Kansas City on two separate planes, the Patriots were able to isolate the players who came in close contact with Newton last week, but as of this morning, there have been no new positive tests within the organization.

The police escort marked the beginning of a hectic day, as the Patriots will immediately fly back to New England following tonight’s game.
