In an effort to protect fans from coronavirus during the 2020 season, the New England Patriots announced in a latter to season ticket holders Monday that the team will be offering free parking to all home games at Gillette Stadium.

“In order to show our appreciation for your commitment to the Patriots during this unique season — and in acknowledgment that it will be different than any other season we have ever experienced together — we want to share that we will provide free parking in all Gillette Stadium lots this year,” the letter reads. “From both a safety and convenience standpoint, we hope this will simplify one aspect of your game-day experience in 2020 and serve to express our gratitude for your support.”

According to ESPN Boston’s Mike Reiss, the decision was based upon the exchange of cash to enter the lots and the hazards it would have created.

The free parking will cover all fans, not just season ticket holders.

The Patriots also announced that all ticketing, and entry to the stadium, will be digital and per an earlier announcement, season ticket holders at an elevated risk of COVID-19 infection, can skip the 2020 season while retaining their seats.

As it stands, the NFL intends on playing the 2020 regular season on schedule and with fans in some capacity, the details of which remain unknown at this time.

The league did cancel two of four preseason games last month and as Monday, NFLPA representatives are voting to recommend canceling the preseason entirely.

Back in June, the NFL proposed a plan to team owners where the first six to eight rows of each stadium would be covered with a tarp for advertising space.

For more information regarding attendance this fall, stay tuned.
