The New England Patriots announced on Friday that three-time Super Bowl Champion and Patriots Hall of Famer Tedy Bruschi will serve as honorary team captain for the AFC Championship game on Sunday night.

With a trip to Super Bowl LI at stake against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Bruschi will take part in the pregame coin toss at midfield with the team captains.

“With an undefeated record in games that we have honored him, I can’t think of a more perfect player to serve as honorary captain this Sunday,” said Team President and CEO Robert Kraft. “He was called the perfect Patriot by head coach Bill Belichick, and he has lived up to that nickname with an 8-0 record in games where he has been a part of a Patriots celebration.”

Some of the most notable games Bruschi was an honorary captain include Super Bowl XLIX, and the 2014 and 2011 AFC Championship games.

The Patriots are 8-0 when they honor Tedy Bruschi before or during a game. That's an actual, real-life stat.
