Transaction News: Patriots Re-Sign Ventrone to Practice Squad, Add Three Safeties

The New England Patriots on Tuesday afternoon re-signed special teamer/safety Ross Ventrone to their remaining opening on the teams 10-man practice squad.

As first reported in a tweet by ESPN Boston’s Mike Reiss, the signing is a homecoming of sorts for Ventrone as he is reunited with his older brother Ray, who is the assistant special teams coach for the Patriots.

The real story with Ventrone is he no stranger to the Patriots system, from 2010-2012 he went between the practice squad and active roster 29 times and was promoted to the 53-man roster five additional times. Over the course of those three seasons, Ventrone was signed to the practice squad a total 13 times, while released 11.

Here is a brief comical report by ESPN on all of Ventrones comings and goings back before the 2011 AFC Championship.

From 2013-2014, Ventrone was a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers organization who released him earlier this season to help clear a roster spot for wide receiver Martavis Bryant, who came back from serving a four-game suspension.

In other transaction news, The Patriots also signed safety Floyd Raven to the practice squad and claimed safety Dewey McDonald of off waivers from the Indianapolis Colts.

The resulting moves meant Rufus Johnson was placed on the Non-Football Injury List (Illness) and the team released practice squad cornerback Brandon Dixon. Currently, the Patriots now have ten safeties on the active roster.
