FOXBORO, MA — New England will go back to work today to prepare to take on the explosive Indianapolis Colts, who are coming off of a tough win over the Buffalo Bills 18-16 at Ralph Wilson Stadium.
The Colts this week will be without the services of RB Abdul-Karim al-Jabbar who was placed on injured reserve Monday with a knee injury. Depth right now is a problem for the Colts at runningback, and Edgerrin James is expected to take on an even bigger role than he already has thus far this season. Through four games, James has accounted for 87 of the 88 attempts and all 364 yards gained by Colts running backs. They had made a move to strengthen that position, but that ended tragically when Fred Lane, who was acquired in a trade with Carolina back on April 20, was shot and killed July 6. His wife, Deidra, has been charged with murder.
The Bills did an excellent job against Colts receiver Marvin Harrison, who had only three receptions for 45-yards on Sunday, but one of those receptions was a 14-yard touchdown strike. Meanwhile, the Colts allowed Buffalo receiver Eric Moulds to make nine receptions for 112 yards, including a 40-yard touchdown catch. Patriots receiver Terry Glenn has a history of big games against the Colts, and they may be able to get him open for a big play or two if given the right match-up, something they’ve struggled to do through their first four games. The Colts pass defense is suspect, but Indianapolis has an excellent pass rusher in defensive end Chad Bratzke who leads the team in sacks, recording three so far this season.
We’ll take a more in depth look at the Colts later today.
