FOXBORO, MA — The AFC East is heating up, and it appears that the race will come right down to the final week with the way things are going. Here’s a quick look at the rest of the AFC East teams.

Miami (7-1) sits atop the standings right now, and Damon Huard has carried the team with Dan Marino out with an injury. Their defense has been the story so far and is ranked third in the NFL. They will take on AFC East Rival Buffalo (6-3) who has been the only team this year to beat Miami. They defeated them 23-18 back on October 4th in Miami, and have a chance this Sunday to sweep the series in Buffalo.

Indianapolis (6-2) has surprised everyone this season. Quarterback Peyton Manning has taken the Colts to the top of the AFC in total offense, averaging 373 yards per game. Manning has 2,282 passing yards, and is on pace for a club record 4,564. Edgerrin James, who was this year’s top runningback taken in the NFL draft is tied for the AFC East lead with 746 rushing yards, and can become the first rookie to lead the AFC in rushing since Curtis Martin did it back in 1995. Wide receiver Marvin Harrison has an NFL leading 887 receiving yards, and could be the first Colt to lead the league in receiving yards since 1976 when Roger Carr last did it.

Buffalo (6-3) is back with Doug Flutie leading the way yet again. Flutie has passed for 1,952 yards and 12 touchdowns this season, and is on track to finish with 3,470 yards passing and 21 touchdowns. He has also rushed for 347 rushing yards, and is on pace to run for 617, the most by a quarterback since 1997 when Steve McNair rushed for 674. Flutie led the Bills to a win over Miami back on October 4, and will look for a series sweep on Sunday.

The Jets (2-6) have suffered some major setbacks so far this season, and will look to rebound against the Patriots this week. Curtis Martin is tied with Indy’s Edgerrin James for the AFC East lead in rushing with 746 yards, and could become only the second Jet to lead the AFC since Freeman McNeil did it back in 1982. Keyshawn Johnson has 628 receiving yards, and is on pace to have his second consecutive 1,000 yard season. He had 1,256 yards last season.
