8/6/07
Monday night practice notebook
By Erik Scalavino, Patriots.com and PFW Staff Writer

A complete rundown of all the action from Monday night's practice.

On an overcast evening, the Patriots practiced inside Gillette Stadium before a crowd of season ticket holders. The team is clearly getting ready for game time, as they worked on several situational scenarios throughout the night.

QB Matt Cassel took nearly all the snaps in all the throwing drills, including offense-vs-defense play.

Play of Practice
Brandon Meriweather INT
In an end-of-game situational scrimmage, Meriweather made a great read of Matt Cassel’s desperation throw, sealing the “win” for the defense.

Who’s Hot
QB Matt Cassel Despite the ill-time throw at the end, Cassel took pretty much all of the snaps in tonight’s action. For the most part, he looked good doing so.

Who’s Not
TE Matt Kranchick
He appeared to severely hurt his wrist in 11-on-11 work. A trainer was working feverishly to alleviate his pain.

More Monday Notes
Notable absentees from the season-ticket-holder-only practice: WR Kelley Washington, WR Donte Stallworth, S Artrell Hawkins, LB Pierre Woods, WR Randy Moss, TE Kyle Brady, DL Jarvis Green, all the remaining PUP players, and CB Asante Samuel.
DB Rashad Baker, however, returned to practice.

Players wearing red (no-contact) jerseys remained the same: RB Laurence Maroney, plus LBs Junior Seau and Eric Alexander.

Red zone rushing offense, punt blocking, and WRs on DBs man-to-man started things off.

In full squad scrimmaging, linebacker Adalius Thomas picked off a Cassel pass at the 50 and took it all the way for a score.

In the last 20 minutes of practice, things got pretty exciting. The PA announcer informed the crowd that the Pats were going to work on an end-of-game situation. They had the ball on their own 25 with a minute, 30 left in the "game," one timeout, and down 8 points. They proceeded to play out this drive to its conclusion. In the end, Cassel took the team down to the opposing 30, where he just barely missed an open Benjamin Watson in the back of the end zone with 5 seconds left.

In his second attempt at a game-winning drive, Cassel again drove the offense into the opponents’ territory, before Meriweather made the play of practice.
