It's based on four NFL sources. Hondo is a Michigan-based sports reporter out of a Lansing TV station.

The mock has the Pats taking USC middle linebacker Rey Maualuga.

Mock Draft 1.0

I think he's the Vince Wolfork for us this year. Let's keep our fingers crossed and hope he falls to us. I think the combo of him and Mayo would be the stud IL package in the league.

I know a lot of people here have a downer on ReyM but you gotta say the potential for him and Mayo as our ILB's for the next 10 years is mouth watering

Jerod Mayo and Rey Maualauga would be one of the best ILB tandems in the league! Maybe he falls to us in the 1st but I would trade up to #15 HOU to get him. We give up #23 + #58 for #15 (1080 vs. 1050). Maybe Houston would be willing to do this trade so that they can get LB Clay Matthews who would be a great fit in their scheme and would probably be available at #23. We wont be using 11 picks with us already having a stacked roster so we may aswell trade up or if not trade into next year. Just a thought.

If we're faced with both Maualuga and Pettigrew at #23, I hope we trade up so we can land both. There's a lot of depth in the 20-45 range of this draft, but I see these two as the biggest potential impact players in the draft.

I would be delighted if we got Rey M.

I wouldn't really have much problem trading up to get him either.

I would have a problem with that... If we trade up it should be for Malcolm Jenkins.... Not for Rey M.

Nice mock but in this scenario I imagine the Pats trading up for Jenkins, especially with the Saints sitting there with only 4 total picks in this draft. The Saints could move down pick up a 2nd + other considerations and still get themselves a RB. I would be happy with Rey Maualuga but 23 is a little high for a 2-down player.

Very nice effort. I would not be totally disappointed if we took ReyMal, and in this scenario, we still have a chance to take Butler at #34 and Barwin next.

You got that right. Then Barwin at 34, and hopefully a safety, and an OL or possibly a DE, in some order.

If Rey Maualuga didn't go to USC I don't think half as many people would be so high on him. If scouts don't like what they see on film, what does everyone else see here about him that's so exciting? He goes for the big hits and misses half the time, can't shed blocks, and gets knocked to the ground a lot.

I'm not very high on him as a fit for the 3-4 defense, the thought of moving up for him sounds like an even worse value. Why give up two potential players for the chance to take one who doesn't even seem to be a good fit?

Rey Maualuga - most overrated linebacker in this year's draft. There, I've said it. Maualuga might prosper in the 4-3 if he's properly protected by good DTs but I don't see him succeeding in a pats style 3-4.

Maualuga is the one player that can have the most impact as a rookie. He and Mayo would eventually be the best ILB tandem. ILB is the most glaring problem. Followed by a pass rush. I still believe that adding Peppers or J.Taylor, drafting Maualuga at 23 and maybe English at 34-grabbing a safety at 47, and an offensive lineman at 58. Take a look at this:

23. Maualuga-ILB-U.S.C

34. English-OLB- N.Illinois

47. Will Moore-SS-Missouri

58. Antoine Caldwell-center-Alabama

89. Bear Pascoe-te-Fresno St

97. Mitch King-dl Iowa

*I doubt we will keep these picks. Probably trade #34 for a round one in 2010.

You have some valid points. ReyMal does spend a lot of time on the ground. But when he hits, he brings the lumber. No LBer in this draft brings the wood like ReyMal.

Some of the other items can be corrected via coaching.

I would be very careful before taking Caldwell. He is a leaner and not a drive blocker.
