I'm not 100% sure, but I believe the Patriots can assume all or some of the Eagles cap hit, even if a new contract is not worked out. I don't see them covering a lot of cap from the Eagles, giving up a high round pick, and also paying Brown.

A dollar in 2040 has significantly less value if it's it is not in your possession until 2040. Even though you own the rights to next year's pick today, the player won't be in your possession until next year.

The pick when it arrives has the same value, but time also has value. How about giving me all your money today, and it will be guaranteed returned in a year with no interest? Afterall a dollar is a dollar.
