Wednesday Evening Practice Notebook
By Erik Scalavino, Patriots.com and PFW Staff Writer
All the important developments from Wednesday evening's two-hour, full-pads practice.
...
Play of Practice
LB Corey Mays INT
Mays stole a touchdown pass from Quinton Smith. QB Matt Gutierrez threw a floater behind Smith, who turned back to make the catch, but Mays reacted more quickly and wrestled the ball away for the pick.
Who’s Hot
WR Bam Childress
The past few practices have been good for Childress. He’s made the most of several opportunities on both offense and special teams.
Who’s Not
WR Donté Stallworth
He still seems to be working his way back since coming off PUP. Stallworth has participated in practice, but his reps have been limited.
More Wednesday night notes
Annual rookie “hazing” took place at the start of practice. The veterans poured jugs of water on a grassy slope at the far corner of the practice fields, which the rookies then slid around on, leaving them soaking wet in their uniforms. Pretty tame, as hazings go.
Kickoff return team: WR Wes Welker, RB Kevin Faulk, Childress, RB Sammy Morris, DB Gemara Williams, and DB Willie Andrews rotated in and out.
7-on-7 down near the goal line, going in: Cassel threw a great pass from 20 yards out to a streaking Jabar Gaffney. Running towards the left side of the end zone. Brady threw a perfect over-the-shoulder TD pass to Wes Welker, over the heads of Brandon Meriweather, Eugene Wilson, and Ellis Hobbs in zone coverage.
The team worked on goal line rushing offense and defense, with all 11 players on each side of the ball.
Rivers made a good first impression. He caught a TD pass from Cassel during goal line 11-on-11 play.
At one point late in practice, LB Adalius Thomas limped off the field after a play. It looked like he may have had his foot stepped on. He didn’t appear seriously hurt, however. After a few minutes of walking it off, he was seen joking around with teammates as he appeared to explain what happened to him. He returned to action a few plays later.
K Stephen Gostkowski made 7 of 8 field goals from between 30 and 40 yards to end practice.
