bye week fodder:

I had a thought about how many QB's went on to have some
success after losing in a Superbowl.

As far back as 1980 there has been only one QB who lost his first
Superbowl appearance and go on to win in another Superbowl as starting QB.
Most of the time the losing QB just fades away.

Here is list of QBs that lost their first time Superbowl appearance
---------------------------------------
Kapernick ( jury's still out here)
Grossman
Hasselback
McNabb
Delhome
Gannon
Collins
McNair
Chandler
Bledsoe
O'Donnell
Humphries
Kelly
Esiason
Elway ( only QB who went on to win a Superbowl and have a great career)
Grogan
Marino
Woodley
Anderson
Jaworski
Ferragamo
------------------------ didn't look at 70's ------------------
Most QB's in this list didn't do much after their SB appearance.
So it seems that if a QB loses in his first Superbowl appearance
their career is most likely over ( Kelly and Elway are exceptions).

Seems pointless.

Ignoring the existence of conferences for a moment, say 64 teams have made the Super Bowl since 1980. So 928 teams have not.

Of those 64, half of them won the Super Bowl, so whoever was quarterback does not have the opportunity to be part of this statistic (lose the game, then win again later).

And then of the 32 who lost, you're looking for one who got there again, and then won the second time around?

Seems more like a re-statement of how rare it is to win the Super Bowl than any kind of trend.

( don't forget duplicate appearances )

( actually won again some time in the future. Elway lost twice before winning)

Assertion1: Most QBs do not win a Superbowl ( your assertion )

Assertion2: The career of most QBs who lose in their first Superbowl appearance is short lived from that point on.

There is a difference.

I think this just shows how hard it is to win a Superbowl for any QB. You could probably make a similar list for those who won their first Superbowl then never got there again, or never won again (right now Peyton Manning would be on that list).

Even if he had won his first Super Bowl, Rich Gannon was probably going to have a short career after that.

I'll agree that some of those guys had surprising career fizzles, however; Delhomme is the first one who comes to mind.

And by the way -- most people would say Marino had a good career.

I'm well aware that duplicate appearances are possible. Just looking at it as 992 "quarterbacked teams" since 1980 to keep it simple. Besides, its a conservative estimate, since duplicate appearances are more likely for people who aren't on this list (the Bradys and Montanas of the world).

The thing is, an average quarterback has a short career regardless of whether they go to the Super Bowl or not. Look at all the guys who have started for a season. The chances that the career of the average QB coincides with two Super Bowl appearances, the first being a win and the second ... just very low.
