Reiss,Rodak and Yates all take a guess at what the Pats defense will do this year.

Predictions: Forecasting the Pats' defense - New England Patriots Blog - ESPN Boston

My guess would be 360 yards total average - with 80 Rushing/280 Passing

Ranking at 19th total in the league

I think the team has one of the best assorted talents in the front 7 but the talent level quickly evaporates when it goes into the secondary which is why i expect the Pats to rarily give up 100 yards to any runner this year but will probably be once again generous in passing if the opposing QB has time to throw.

Apparently Pass rushing and turnover statistics > overall defensive stats.

The pats need to get relentless pressure on the qb in order to be great.

If Pats get just a middle of the road D this season, they should be awful tough to beat.

I predict top 20 in yards allowed and top 15 in scoring defense. Either way, this D will be better. I actually expect D's to improve across the league.

After reviewing the Pats 2011 defensive snap counts (from Reiss) it's amazing that they only gave up 21.4 points per game. What strikes me the most about the 2012 defense is how improved the secondary should be; taking a unit that was less than zero and replacing it with one that's at least competent and funtional.

The improved secondary combined with a more dynamic front seven should allow the Pats to average less than 20 points per game and significantly improve their chances of getting big stops.

Just by eliminating the dead weight on the roster, the 2012-13 New England Patriots defense should improve:
