The prevailing feeling is that we got a good haul but it could have been better. Polk looks good but we couldn't land Legette, then we turned away from McConkey and Mitchell, then traded down but maybe at that point we should've pivoted to OT and take Paul or Suamataia, then go WR later. Then...
We have to see how these picks work out, but I think the confusion among fans is:
- Maye at 3: no confusion there, that's a potential home run, and a trade down was risky and wouldn't have worked. This guy can be a stud a-la-Herbert. Very happy with the result from pick 3.
- Polk at 37: good...
Mafi is out. Everyone seemed to feel that Sow was ok, but maybe he becomes a backup G/T? I think Strange is safe. Maybe Robinson projects as a center who'd take over next year? That's all I can think of, but wouldn't he have been there at 110 or even a little lower?
The benefits of cratering at 4-13 are not only that you get the 3rd pick, and you also are granted time to rebuild. Nobody expects this team to come close to making the playoffs this year, so they were free to take a 21 year old who has huge upside but needs a year of bench time.
Cousins has more career earnings than probably anyone in history and has never shown loyalty to any team. It's always just about the dollars to him, so he has nothing to be mad about. If I were an Atlanta fan, though, I'd be pissed that the management doesn't know what the hell they're doing...
If we're judging the OL and QB as of today, prior to the draft, then:
- QB play will be improved. Brissett handles pressure better and doesn't turn the ball over, so those things alone = better. The offensive coaching staff will be a lot better, resulting in better QB play. Our WR's are better...
This thread is why we need to manufacture draft capital from our #3 pick, so that we're picking 3 times in the top 40 - e.g.:
- if we deal with Minnesota, we're picking at 11, 23, 34, 68 (and possibly use the 68 to trade back up from 11 to 7 or 8)
- or a smaller trade-down to 6 for the Giants...
I got here by trading from 3 to 4 and from 4 to 5, with the assumption that Daniels went at 2 and I kept trading down by 1 slot till only one of Maye and McCarthy were left, taking small comp as I went. Got good quality for each of the 7 picks.
My favorite deal remains trading down 1 spot with AZ for minor compensation - eg swap 34 for their 27, plus their 4th rounder. Get something for little to no risk. Incent AZ by making them think that the Chargers want to trade up to 3.
if we trade down to 11, I think Denver at 12 will not trade up after the Zack Wilson acquisition and with Stidham also on the roster. The Raiders at 13 are a threat to jump above 11 though. So if you assume worst case is that Chicago, Washington, Minnesota, and the Giants all take QB's at 1, 2...
Good trade for Denver, for a late round pick swap. Wilson's problems are mental/psychological. This gets him back home/out west where he'll be more comfortable and close to family. He was probably a Broncos fan growing up. Plus will work for an offensive coach who may be able to turn him around...
I agree with Ted Johnson who said yesterday that his home run scenario is to trade back, get some high draft choices, and take Penix as our QB, who he feels is as good as any of these guys.
