Mike Reiss summarizes rookie contributions in one paragraph

Best rookie on every NFL team

i

New England Patriots

The Patriots received significant contributions from the rookie class. Guards Shaq Mason (66 percent of the snaps) and Tre' Jackson (54.2 percent) -- both fourth-round picks -- were part of a three-man rotation. Meanwhile, long snapper Joe Cardona (fifth round, Navy) handled his job well, undrafted centerDavid Andrews started the first 10 games of the season and helped bail the team out when a string of injuries hit, and undrafted Brandon King was second on the team with 12 special teams tackles. But we'll give the nod to Malcom Brown, who played 46.5 percent of the defensive snaps as the top option in a committee to replace departed Vince Wilfork at defensive tackle. -- Mike Reiss

Richards and Grissom were questionable picks as of now (and back when they were drafted), but you can't fault them too much since the highest any of them were on the depth charts was 4th (Richards behind McCourty, Chung, Harmon and Grissom behind Jones, Ninkovich, Sheard). I think they've both, or at least Richards, been steady ST contributors though. Wasn't overly impressed or disgusted by what I saw when Richards saw defensive snaps. Grissom has either been absent or invisible on defense.

But.... But.... Earlier this year some mediot called Malcom a bust?!?!?

With good health and hard work Roberts will be starting the opposite side of Malcolm next year.

Collectively the FO is killing it.

I think it was Ron Wolf who said that if you can get 2 starters and 2 contributors every draft you are doing extremely well.

This is why we need to be patient with picks. Look at last year.

Last year Easley was oft-injured and so-so. While he was the same this year, he played a ton more and was #1 DT in football in QB pressures per pass play. James White is another example. Last year- zip. This year he had 40 catches and in December has been huge. Stork clearly offered immediate benefit.....oh and that #21 FA CB whatshisface... 2 Starters, 2 key contributors

2013...Collins, Ryan and Harmon. Dobson is in there too but, well....2 Starters, 1 Key player, 1 oft-injured contributor

2012....Jones, High, Ebner. 2 Starters. 1 Key STer

2011...Solder, Vereen, Ridley, Cannon...4 Starters/key players

2010...DMC, Gronk, AH. Even Spikes was ok. 4 Starters and ProBowlers

2009...Chung, Vollmer and JE11 3 Starters

2008.....Mayo and Slater...2 ProBowlers

Some drafted (or free agent) college players need 1/2 a season to catch on while some may need 1-3 whole seasons to develop.

Brown is reportedly turning into a stud. He will be swallowing up RBs for years to come.

Lol @Indy

BB was so ready to trade 32 . . . And then an error occurred. :D

It's not an exact science. Brown was a gift, looks like Jordan has potential at safety, and we're simply loading up at DE, whether the injured or not yet utilized, or Dekoda Watson.

Our CBs are probably better than expected, but the current D defends on getting to the QB and that will be a battle for playing time next year and maybe more.

Hey, sometimes you really need another 5'10" wide receiver to be a 3rd/4th option (3rd/4th option to catch passes from Charlie Whitehurst, since Luck's innards look like hamburger, since you couldn't protect him at all)

Brown has really been hitting his stride over the past month or so. It was clear that he had issues with technique--and maybe with functional strength--that have been mitigated over the course of the year through training/coaching.

I think people sometimes forget that Wilfork wasn't a day-one starter either. It took Wilfork about the same amount of time to become comfortable in his role, and he didn't become the dominant force that we remember him as until after his rookie season. And even then, he started his Patriots career closer to Brown in size and style than what he became from about 2006 onward. Brown is following something resembling the Wilfork arc at this point, and I'd be thrilled if that remains the case over the next few years.

The F.O as hit home runs in the draft, FA, and trades.

Aquib Talib, Akeem Ayers, Jonathan Cassilas, Akiem Hicks were some of the trades they've made, while picking up FA's like Jabaal Sheard, Alan Branch, Dion Lewis were some big FA pickups.

Overall this was a very good rookie class for the Patriots. A lot of hits and some TBD with depth guys who never really got a shot.

Overall I give this year an "A" considering pick position and the draft not being a strong class (though not weak).

Brown looks like a solid start for years to come and perhaps will get a few trips to the probowl too.
Mason/Jackson/Andrews all look to be solid players though Mason probably has the highest ceiling but i think they are locks for years to come.

Coleman is a nice little bonus too who seems to be turning into a solid nickle.

King seems like he will stick purely for STs.

Roberts/Grissom/Flowers/Richards are all TBD but have flashed but injuries and top talent in front of them have kept them off the field mostly. Generally I have positive views and hopes for all of them.

Cardona solves the LS spot.

Yet another very good draft though to make it really good a probowler would need to emerge from it which is not always to be expected when picking #32.

If Dorsett doesn't pan out I think Dolts fans will be disappointed they didn't pick another player(not named Brown). I think most of them are happy with their two d-lineman from Stanford they got in the draft.

The implosion directly after the draft was rather enjoyable though lol:D

Amazing that a bum like Whitehurst is dating Jewel.

How many teams manage to get 2 UDFA rookies to start. We did in Coleman and Andrews (I think of the nickel back as a starter these days) And while Andrews no longer starts, his contribution continues as the OL keeps getting hit.

And what about those mid-season trades. How many teams make mid season trades to begin with, let alone with up getting 2 key contributors for the last 2 years in a row. Think about it. We get a starting DT for a redundant player, and a contributing WR-returner for a low round pick. What incredible value.

Finally - When it comes right down to it. If you take a look at what we have coming back to this team from IR. Look at the number for draft picks we still have (10 IIRC) Think about the FA opportunities. We will have a moderate amount of cap space and almost everyone is signed for next year.

The only reason we will miss that first round pick is because it adds to our OWN amusement during April and the principle of having it stolen for nothing. Odds are that 10 or more teams who get that first rounder will come away with nothing 4 years later. Meanwhile we added 5+ "starters" from the process (Brown, Mason, Jackson, Cardona, Coleman, and Andrews.

The fact is that with all the returning guys from IR and the competition and talent they will add. The odds are that next year's team will be stronger and deeper than this one, even if Roger took ALL our damned draft picks. It's just that April would suck for us.

BB does not know how to draft???
Yes LOL ....we need to resurrect those old Belichick needs a GM thread ....he's trying to wear too many hats. Ha .... maybe bring those back after the playoffs for some fun.

This team's ability to sign UFAs, street FAs, vagabonds, old players, unwanted players, misfits, over-the -hill and outcasts and assimilate them into the system and have them help the team is insane.

The list of those players since 2001 that made $1m or less is about 2 miles long.
