Welker wants to be homer again....

For old times sake, I'd like to see the Patriots sign Welker. It's not going to happen because Wes
is almost as much of a health risk as Austin Collie.

And I think there are plenty of teams that will pay an amount that does not incorporate said risk :) If someone's going to pay him for what he did 2 years ago and disregard the risk, we can't match that.

I say take him if he wants a low-value contract, but I don't think he's going for that.

There is one intriguing scenario: Welk gets some middling offers (in terms of guaranteed money), one year offers, etc., but wants to prove to the rest of the league that he's still a going concern and can go a year without a concussion ("it was just bad luck," that sort of thing). So he signs for a year "back home" in NE for cheap.

I think the ship has sailed. TFB & him are still friends, but I don't know whether bridges are burned w/BB. Once he was gone I never tracked the "he left for the same money"/"he got more in Denver" argument. But the main determinant is what the market says he's worth - and I think the market will be better for him elsewhere.

Eh, they really aren't that alike. Edelman is an outside reciever. Wes is really only inside. For the record, I'd take Wes back on the minimum. Played his heart out here.

From my view (from my couch) it looked like Welker's rout was 12 o'clock then 9 o'clock. JE11 goes 12 and then 2, if that makes any sense.

The depth spots at WR should be used on younger guys that are developing, not on a 34 year old slot WR that would be 3rd on the depth chart for that position
Hmmmmm .....development guy that will never make the game day roster
Or........ instant offense from a vet that walks into camp with the system ingrained in his hair plugs.
Long shot vs sure thing?
I vote....Win now

I'd agree with you if we didn't have 2 better solutions already on the roster for the Slot position. The only position that Welker can play well is the slot, but we have edelman and Amendola in that role who play it better at this point in their career.

You'd essentially be cutting a 5th or 6th young guy like Boyce, Tyms or Gibson for a 34 year old veteran that would rarely see the field, if at all. Those other guys provide depth and development at the outside WR position which is needed more so than Slot depth

If Edelman or Amendola goes onto IR, I'm picking up the phone and immediately calling Welker, but unless that happens it wouldn't be a good use of a roster spot in my opinion

Nothing against Welker, it's just we moved on from him and got excellent replacements.. and father time, as well as a series of concussions have caught up with him

It's for exactly this reason that even debating a Welker return is pointless. I guarantee Belichick feels the same way on a pure roster level, whether he has a grudge or not.

You will never see Welker in a Patriot uniform ever again.

Well said. That level of WR depth usually includes the ability to play special teams, so yes--the younger guy with better ST ability normally gets the nod there.

You're kidding right? Guys sucker punch each other in the nuts, step on hands, gouge eyes and more. And this is one of the dirtiest you've seen?

It was dirty but it definitely wasn't the dirtiest I've ever seen. Hell, in just keeping it with the Patriots, Wilfork diving at J.P. Losman's knee with his arm out was dirtier than that.

Mannings ducks ruined his career

First off....you realize Edelman and Amendola play different WR positions and in 3 WR sets, they take the field together. So my question has to be, if one of these two STARTERS gets hurt, who is their replacement?
Yes....they can be labeled interchangeable....but that doesn't change the reality that Edelman and Amendola are WRs #1 and #3 respectively and two of the three starters in 3 WR sets.
So......... I count ZERO depth behind these two WRs

Next....you value Boyce, Tyms, Gibson and I will include Dobson in this mix as " depth and development at the outside WR position"......the outside WR position filled by Lafell.
So.......4 players necessary for Lafell depth.
In other words.....Zero depth for #1 and #3 but 4 deep to fill in for #2. ....Huh???

Next...the MYTH that Pats WR depth is an important special teams component
In 2014...........total special teams snaps from these highly valued "depth and development guys"
Boyce.......0 ST snaps in '14
Tyms........8
Gibson......2
Dobson.....0
So.......during the Patriots 466 special teams snaps, NE's WR depth made a special teams appearance 10 out 466 snaps or 2%......BUT...in reality, considering 11 players are fielded each special teams play, NE's WR depth was given a special teams opportunity in 10 out of 5,126 available slots or 0.2%.
Note....WR Slater lead Pats in special teams plays but this WR was fielded 13 times as an actual WR.
Note.....Special teams plays by NE's starting 3 WRS...Edelman=48, Lafell=44, Amendola=82.
In other words, BB fielded his WR starters 170 times....but his WR depth guys 10. Some value added :)
Conclusion: NE's WR depth as it is currently configured is USELESS.....ZERO WR impact, ZERO special teams impact....ZERO depth provided for WR#1 and WR#3.

Yes....a Welker addition at the expense of one the NE's depth fillers is a NO BRAINER. How anyone who actually thought this out can argue differently is scary.
No doubt a Welker signing would bring some crap to the team that BB normally likes to avoid....Yet Spikes is back on board....so lets stick to pure football decision making.....WW is again....a NO BRAINER.
Sure, money would be an issue, health has to be factored, and WW would have to accept a secondary role.....but if WW is willing......NO BRAINER

Vet minimum only and he buys his own brain-death insurance and EMS.

And he buys Jerry Rice's stick-um gloves.

Mankins full on blast to the nuts...
