Talking with the one sane jets fan on the jets suck thread made me think of this. In 5 years when Brady retires with 6 rings as the unquestioned GOAT and knowing that he is a once in a lifetime talent so the pats probably won't get another elite top 3 QB what kind of QB do you want to follow him? A cheap game manager that you can build a team around like Alex Smith? Or an explosive QB that you give weapons to like Matt Ryan?

Give me someone like Matt Ryan all day. Being a "game manager" just means you really arent that good of a QB. Someone like Matt Ryan could do what Alex Smith does. Matt Ryan can hand the ball of every play, he can check it down to the RB or throw a 4 yard pass every play. A "game manager" cant do what someone like Matt Ryan can do.

I am talking type of QB not a specific QB as I am also optimistic about JG but that is not the thought process I had and the data I need to show the jets fan something.

Matt ryan is a game manager. If your last name is not brady, rodgers, breees, luck or manning, you are a game manager to me.

Depends entirely on the team around him. If the rest of the team, particularly the running game and the defense, is elite then give me a game manager. Otherwise, give me a guy who can go out and win games. In any case, for the examples above I'll always take Matt Ryan over Alex Smith.

Matt ryan is a game manager. He's the same as alex smith.
I disagree. A typical Alex Smith day might look like 25/32 220 yards and a TD. While a typical Matt Ryan day looks like 35/50 334 yards 3 TD and an int. Who is the better QB? Idk a lot depends on the rest of the football team. I think Ryan has to win shootouts while Smith plays to the strength of his system and let's the team win the game.

Agree entirely but I am asking your personal preference. You are the GM what kind of QB do you want?

I don't think that's a question that anyone, even if they're the GM, could answer in a vacuum. Needs change depending on the team that you have assembled. I would say that an explosive QB is generally worth more, since there are a lot more teams that don't have top-tier o-lines, RBs, and defenses than do.

Fair enough. I would want (assuming I can't have a Brady Rodgers manning) the game manager because I think it's cheaper and easier to build the rest of the team instead of spending on weapons. I believe its easier to shut down an explosive offense then to outscore a deep balanced team that doesn't make mistakes

Might be me? But all qbs should be game managers, its the main thing to do? If you asked me what i prefered between a running qb and a pocket qb, the answer would be pocket. But both styles atleast have to be game managers!

so what you're saying is Alex smith is Chad pennington?

Yup and I think more people would rather have that kind of QB but I could be wrong so I started a poll

Given those two choices, I would definitely choose Ryan, though I'm not sure I'd ever call him "explosive."

I Just want a good QB. A "game manager" is just a average QB that you tell don't lose and buys in to it.
An "explosive QB" is an average QB you try to build weapons around and let him score with top notch talent.

They are basically in the same class and neither is particularly better than the other. I would just say get the best QB possible period. Hope JG is the answer.

Too many unknowns to answer that question. What will they look like in a few years? A game manager is more than adequate if you have the 2000 Ravens defense. An explosive QB and/or explosive weapons is a must if you have the 2011 Patriots defense. That is, unless you have a pro bowl RB with a line that is very good... then you can get away with a game manger anyway. You get the picture.

What I've learned from this thread is that we all have our own definitions of "game managers" which range from "a guy whose main job is to hand off the to RB, and who you don't allow to throw the ball more than 4 yards downfield" to "every successful QB in the NFL."

FWIW, in my definition "game manager" means a cool-headed QB who plays savvy situational football and takes what the defense gives him -- regardless of whether he has a noodle arm or a cannon.

The opposite would be "gunslinger," the lionhearted QB who creates a lot of thrills with big, splashy plays...in both directions.

I'll take the game manager any day.

I hear what your saying but that's not the point of the question... you are the GM, you have a choice between two QB's one of whom is more of a game manager (smart, accurate, makes good decisions, might not have the strongest arm) and the other is explosive (big arm, fearless, makes lots of plays both good and bad) which TYPE of QB do you want for your team? I am talking purely hypothetical and just provided the two names as an example of what I was talking about. I thought they were simular in rank among NFL QB's. Ryan is the better QB but he is also more expensive and the team around him not as good because of that. Kind of higher level but a simular example, do you want Luck or Wilson?

Where is the "cry bitter tears of longing into my luke warm morning coffee as I pine for days gone by" option? Cuz I didn't see that one on the poll options list.
