Patriots Tried out OT Derek Sherrod

A week ahead of time but...

"hey, what can you tell us about the Packers blocking schemes?"
"Ok, thank you for your time we will be in touch at a later date"

Is how I imagine that try out started & finished.

That sounds like it came from the comments section at PFT.

I hear ya. I'm hoping Fleming is ok because he is an amazing blocker and was a beast on Sunday.

Was just wondering if this might have been a depth signing as Sherrod is no where near the same level as Fleming.

It's also something all 32 teams do because why wouldn't you? Sherrod is awful - total bust which is a seemingly rare thing in Green Bay.

If they do sign him, unless Fleming is hurt that badly he ends up on IR, it's a short term pick up to backup Cannon.

Would he really be able to answer that question?

Thing with Fleming's injury it didn't seem to serious after he went down. He got up limped off, iirc gave someone a rectiom on the team he was ok and didn't go directly into the locker room as he was seen talking to Luck on the field after the game.

I didn't notice, so that is great to hear. Thanks for the info.

Sherrod is one of my draft binkies. Finesse but effective in college. He was pretty bad when I saw him on the Packers and always wondered if he would have played the same under Scar.

I obviously have no idea what his future holds, but if we sign him, I think it will work out.

I'll be gladder when they stop looking at him. :)

I don't get this, Os.

I understand that Sherrod has had a lot of issues - the fact that a 1st round pick was cut says as much. But he's been dinged up a lot. He has talent, he's reportedly a good kid, and he would be a cheap depth pickup. He could be an upgrade over Jordan Devey as a T/G. Or if Cam Fleming is hurt he could be used as a 6th OL in a limited capacity. He could provide a backup plan with Marcus Cannon a UFA next year. I don't see the harm in taking a look, and if they see something they think they can develop, going from there.

Low cost, low risk, as Brother Luuked notes. Probably low probability of working out, but still, low cost, low risk.

Posted on another thread as well, but at the end of the game when NBC was doing the obligatory shots of Belichick walking off the field I thought I saw Fleming right behind him walking off as well. Couldn't see if he was limping or not, but the fact that he was still on the sidelines(if it was him) and standing up has to be a good sign.

Every time I've seen Sherrod he's looked abominable. I'm also assuming it is Fleming's injury that fostered their interest. If this is just a casual thing, I interpret that as good news on the health front.

I certainly hope Fleming isn't injured. But when GB cut Sherrod I hoped the Pats would take a look. I agree, he hasn't looked good. But low risk, low cost, and the threshold for upgrading Devey or being a Cannon alternative isn't that high.

Post-game, they showed a shot of Fleming at mid-field talking to his ex-teammate Luck like nothing was wrong. At the time of the injury it didn't look good, but I think they'd have taken him into the locker room if they suspected anything serious. Probably a sprain, which could mean he misses a game.

Any word on Fleming? Hope his injury wasn't too bad.

Hopefully this is unrelated to Fleming's status, as 40yspatfan said, it looked like he was OK at the end of the game.

Still, nothing wrong in taking a look at a once first round talent who hasn't panned out - especially if you are facing his former team the next week. And as mayoclinic said, might present an upgrade over Devey.
