This is the first of several of these that we will do from now until the draft. The purpose is to see what players people have in mind at various times in the process.

Here is how it works for those who have not done this over the past few years.

1. From either the PFW rankings or the CBS rankings pick a player at the draft position of the Patriots. The Patriots have , right now, picks #27,31,48,63,94,126.

2. For the first round picks you can go up no more than 3 spots, no more. So for #27 you can go up to the player ranked #24 but no higher. You can pick any player ranked below #27.

3. For the 2nd rounds and after you can go up no more than 5 players ranked above. So you can pick a player ranked at #43 for the #48 pick but no higher.

4. No mocking other peoples mocks until you post your own mock.

5. After you have done the mock in accordance with 1,2,&3 You can do one with trades or do an entire NFL mock if you like.

Ok here is mine using PFW's rankings:
#27 Dre Kirkpatrick, CB, Ala
Recently cleared of pot charges and should move up.
#31 Mohamed Senu, Wr Rutgers
#48 Jared Crick, De, Neb

#63. Ben Jones C, Ga- real steal at this position
#94. Jonathan Massaquri, DE/OLB Troy- Why ? because Troy always produces good pass rushers.
#126. Brandon Hardin, D B, Oregon St.

CBS
27- Fletcher Cox
31- Dontari Poe
48- Chase Minnifield
63- Vontaze Burfict
94- Dwight Jones
126- TY Hilton

PFW
27- Janoris Jenkins
31- Nick Perry
48- Ben Jones
63- Chase Minnifield
94- TY Hilton
126- Dwight Jones

1A Fletcher Cox - DE - Miss St - Not a true two gapper. But, will provide an interior pass rush and play the run ok. Could get stronger and be more a force vs the run as he matures too.

1B Alshon Jeffrey - WR - South Carolina - He's a love him/hate him guy. All I know is that in their 35-21 2010 upset of top-ranked Alabama. He torched the highly touted Bama secondary. 7rec 127yd and two td's. In 2010 he had 88 rec 1517 yds...yes 1517!! and nine touchdowns. His qb in 2011 was a pothead and got thrown off of the team and his production dropped. 49 rec 762 yd and 8 touchdown. His replacement was more of a run first qb.

2a Vinny Curry - OLB/DE - Marshall. Captain. Team leader. Great motor. 6'3"265LB. He's big enough for our system.

2b Brandon Boykin - CB - Georgia - Prob more of a slot guy/nickel. Had an outstanding senior season. Capped with an outstanding Cap One Bowl against Mich St. Played defense, offense and returned kicks. He did break his leg at the senior bowl. Should be fine though.

3 Jake Bequette - DE - Arkansas 6'5" 264lb. Another pass rusher when we go to nickel package. Can't have enough of them. Will fight Curry for PT in that spot.

4 Tramain Thomas - S - Arkansas 6'0" 190lb. Another Razorback and SEC player. That's where they play the best football. Gives us depth at that position.

I'm re-signing Welker of course. And, would like to get two free-agents from other teams. A free safety; Goldson, Nelson, Griffin, Finnegan(Tough guy can prob change to FS) and hopefully a WR like Brandon Lloyd. I used CBS rankings.

This one is filled with players i like most

I wasnt really aware of DT being of such high need for the Patriots, but alot of you all have cox mocked. Is it a matter of BPA or is it truly #1 need?

Hightower - Mayo - Spikes is a nasty 4-3 LB corp, move over CAR

Love what Hill brings to the table, someone is gonna take a gamble on him between the 2nd and 3rd; though i think 48 is a bit early for him.

Cam Johnson provides solid depth, and has the build to rotate in at both 3-4 olb and 4-3 end

Surprised you waited til the end of the third to take a corner, must be a target in FA. Flemming is a solid pick near 100.

I like marvin jones better than almost any WR slated to go in the third or later. Runs solid routes and is savvy enough to get seperation on almost any play.

9ers fan here in peace. I chose the pats as one of my teams for this year's first draft game. I have come to get wisdom and insight into players, positions and needs. NE is one of the hardest defenses to get a feel for because it seems like they have two seperate sets of players per base defense.

this would easily be the best draft for the pats.

Given that the only player in the first three picks you have a shot at getting realistically is Mercilus; tho i do think he is who will be taken at 27

Thanks.

1. You need to understand the Patriot fans desire to recover lost Richard Seymour days, hence our unending yearning for a D/Lineman and therefore the Fletcher Cox pick. In fairness, he represents great value at #27 and projects as a 3-4 DE best (this mock is predicated on moving back more in that direction next year).

2. Hightower is one of my favourite players in the draft. Not only does he provide cover for our ILB's, at 6'4" and 260lb's he's a good size for a 3-4 OLB. And as you point out creates a beastly 4-3 LB set with Spikes and Mayo backed up by Ninkovich.

3. Ideally I'd trade back for Hill but this mock game doesn't allow it in the first instance. I don't see better value at #48 than a 6'5" WR that can stretch the field (our biggest offensive need).

4. Jamell Fleming. One of my favourite players in the draft, hence waiting to pick a CB. Doubt he goes here in reality.

As for getting a feel for the Patriots in a draft game. Remember two things above all else.

1. Value, value, value. It's the only thing that drives BB's drafting.

2. When picking defensive players, go with ones that are good at sticking to a containing assignment, particularly against the run, but also in not giving up big plays. These are more likely options than attacking defensive players like one-gap, pass rush only options like Bruce Irvin or gambling CB's.

good luck with your draft game.

Using the CBS Rankings:

#27Hightower, LB Ala- can play inside, outside and even down as a DE
#31Sanu, WR, Rutgers
#48 Minnefied, Cb, Va
#63 Ben Jones C, Ga
#94 Mike Martin, DT, Mich - Mike Wright type player
#126- Eddie Whitley, S, Va Tech- would probably try to trade down with this pick.
