It warranted a flag because although the contact was minimal the intent was not. Brady knew that, and that is why he called attention to it. If they can get away with going for the QB's knees all day long and the only penalty results if they happen to land the hit, defenders will play those odds all day long in the hope of knocking him out of the game. Then if they do, after collecting high fives from dirtbag coaches and teamates, they will sheepishly pay their fine and blubber about how they never wanted to hurt a fellow player.
