I guess you can't look back lol
because with that trade we turned a meh offense into the greatest offense of all time... and it only cost us a 4th to get him

was this really a serious question?

It was a great acquisition at the time and it paid off...and trading him away came at the right time, and it will pay off.

Great decision making on both counts.

Correct me if I'm wrong but...

Deion Branch was shipped off to Seattle in 2006 and Givens signed with TEN in 2006.... and these guys were replaced with Doug Gabriel, Reche Caldwell and the aged Troy Brown.

By acquiring Randy Moss, I have to believe the front office was trying to show Tom Brady that they wanted to do right by him and give him a WR corp that could get them back to the big show.

It was a great move, but a move that took the offense in a different direction.

The "pick up" of Moss is very much like the "pick up" of Dillon, in so much as that the Patriots weren't a running team... yet they picked up a legitimate running back and went that direction. Dillon lead to Super Bowl victory... Moss lead to a Super Bowl appearance.

At the time that was a great move as the Pats needed to upgrade the receiver crew (and did in a BIG way with Moss and Welker).

However, the current style of offense is built to beat man to man defenses (the 2010 NY Jets)

And it worked for a time. Bill is all about value and calculated risk/reward and getting ahead of the curve. Moss and Brady connected with Randy's career on the line and the result was an undefeated season, the only 16 game one in NFL history. Bill rolled the dice in extending him based on his diminishing performance down the stretch in that season. Didn't pay the kind of dividends he hoped a $9M #1 would, but it probably did allow for relative continuity for a Bradyless 2008 squad - and that in turn built added value into Cassel. 2009 was the season that underscored why deals with the devil are best made short term with your fingers crossed behind your back. Bill eventually realized that, I think Brady did too, and here we are none the worse for the experience - even ahead a round in the overall draft pick game after reacquiring the guy whose departure kinda made the Moss acquisition a no brainer at the time...
