Update:NFL statement: Result final,Tate should have been flagged
Quote:
From the league’s release:
“Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson threw a pass into the end zone. Several players, including Seattle wide receiver Golden Tate and Green Bay safety M.D. Jennings, jumped into the air in an attempt to catch the ball.
“While the ball is in the air, Tate can be seen shoving Green Bay cornerback Sam Shields to the ground. This should have been a penalty for offensive pass interference, which would have ended the game. It was not called and is not reviewable in instant replay.
“When the players hit the ground in the end zone, the officials determined that both Tate and Jennings had possession of the ball. Under the rule for simultaneous catch, the ball belongs to Tate, the offensive player. The result of the play was a touchdown.
“Replay Official Howard Slavin stopped the game for an instant replay review. The aspects of the play that were reviewable included if the ball hit the ground and who had possession of the ball. In the end zone, a ruling of a simultaneous catch is reviewable. That is not the case in the field of play, only in the end zone.
“Referee Wayne Elliott determined that no indisputable visual evidence existed to overturn the call on the field, and as a result, the on-field ruling of touchdown stood. The NFL Officiating Department reviewed the video today and supports the decision not to overturn the on-field ruling following the instant replay review.

So...
plugging in the translator...
After somebody catches the ball, and then after he and others roll around on the ground for a while, this is the right time to begin to take a very close look.
If two people in fact have their hand or hands on the ball at that point in time, that means it's "simultaneous"
LOL

no balls
"we support the decision not to overturn"
they completely ignored: " It is not a simultaneous catch if a player gains control first and an opponent subsequently gains joint control. "
and the fact that even if it WAS, which i would argue it wasn't, simultaneous, Tate LOST control by removing both hands from the ball as they fell.....
**** goodell and the owners.......the real officials are a necessary part of the game, a whole lot better than the crap they trot out there now, and they don't want to pay their pension plan that costs $3.3 million/year....or exactly .11% of their new TV contract, or roughly $100,000 PER TEAM per year
Re: Update:NFL statement: Result final,Tate should have been flagged
Also, how much sense does it make that possession is reviewable in the endzone but not in the field of play? The replays and challenges are more confusing than the English language.

Re: Update:NFL statement: Result final,Tate should have been flagged
When I read that, it says to me they know there was a penalty and the call was wrong, but we're going to use the "indisputable evidence" card to defend the officials.
Be damn sure if the call was correct on the field they'd be citing the rule, and tell you Jennings had control of the ball first, making it an interception. The rules are not very well written and it leaves a lot of interpretation and judgment, what if one of the simultaneous catch players lands out of bounds?
I don't know if anyone here has ever played magic (the card game) the ruleset is very verbose, and thus complicated, but if understood is very clear on how to handle all situations. There's different tiers of judges, and they do it for pennies, mostly self-gratification. There are intellectuals out there who could referee these games properly and author a proper rulebook if given opportunity.
As long there is subjectivity and ambiguity in the rulebook, you will have the NFL cop-outs like this run rampant.
Re: Update:NFL statement: Result final,Tate should have been flagged
How the hell does the NFL just continue to pile insult on insult on us the fans. This is absolutely ridiculous. Its enough to them that they get to sell us this huge pile of shlt but do they have to insist its a rose?
I mean Mom always said "I am not happy that you threw your brother down the laundry shoot and he got stuck but what really upsets me is that you wont own up to it."
