Re: OT: Michael Irvin accused of rape in civil suit
Does it bother anyone that a woman can point a finger of accusation of rape at any guy, yes even you, at any time without a shred of evidence and cause that guy to suffer public ridicule and humiliation. I don't know if he did or didn't but that isn't my point. More than 2 weeks went by when she finally reported this to police. Her word against his and no proof of rape (even if they did have sex). Her name is kept out of the public view, but his is not. She has absolutely nothing to lose with this action but he loses his reputation, his job and his life. To me, this smacks of the worst possible sort of gold digging. Disgraceful, imo.
Re: OT: Michael Irvin accused of rape in civil suit
In this case, I'll give him the benefit of teh doubt, same as Bettis and Moss. There are some pretty sleazy women out there, hoping that athletes settle rather than defend themselves. What amazes me most is that women don't come down hard on these types, especially those who run battered women shelters. There are some very bad things done to women, and having these (can't say it) trivalizes the terrible situation of some desperate women, and causes some people not to take real accusations seriously.

That’s what we always do, and I think the last nine years we’ve put a pretty competitive team out there on the field every year. I think that’s how you do it – you get good football players. Sometimes they are not always at the No. 1 position, but I don’t think you pass up good football players to get the guys who aren’t as good just because they’re at a position that somebody feels you need.”

It bothers me a lot less than the fact that a huge number of rapes go unreported. I know what you're getting at, but let's not forget the other side of the coin, too.

I can see why they protect her. If she is a victim, she is in for a very rough time. On an analytical level I understand why so many women don't report rapes, though I will never be able to grasp the depth of emotions to first be violated and then be accused of 'coming on' or whatever the defense is. That's what makes the false accusations so onerous and dispicable. It just makes things worse for those who were raped.
This will play out in the courts and we will know soon enough. Until then all we can go on are are own predispositions.

Re: OT: Michael Irvin accused of rape in civil suit
did he lose his job because of the chargers? nobody should get fired for being accused of a crime. also why is this a civil case and not a criminal one? there is clearly a double standard about the press when it comes to rape. she could be trying to get money out of him for something he did not even do, and at the same time she is protected where he is not.
