Default 2010 Pro Bowl change could be Goodell's dumbest decision yet

I know this news is not exactly new to some here but since I saw no one talk about it I wonder if you agree or not that this may be the dumbest decision Goodell has thought of yet

For those who are not yet informed of this, the 2010 Pro Bowl is not only going to be shifted to the site of the Super Bowl 45 in Miami but it is going to be played THE WEEK BEFORE the Super Bowl!

What boggles my mind is that for these players that are going to this event having to head to Miami freaking Beach to play this game instead of the glorious shores of Honolulu seems like going from the aura of Las Vegas to a small slots parlor somewhere in the backhills of Montana.

And what happens if one or both of the teams that are the Super Bowl participants have 5 or more players each elected to the game? - Does Goodell think that the HCs of these teams will actually take a chance on thier players getting injured in the week before the game? - Why not just get rid of this waste of an event?

I know the pro bowl means NOTHING to us as fans but to players not only does it mean another 100 grand in the pocket and the good feeling that comes to them knowing they were rewarded for thier excellent efforts during the season, but it means for a bit of fun and relaxation and a getaway in an area that some could consider a paradise in the US

May definately be the dumbest decision Goodell and whoever else has come up with if you ask me.

2010 Pro Bowl moving to Miami, will be played before Super Bowl

Not a dumb decision at all. The players will mostly still go. Some pass on Hawaii so it's not like Honolulu is drawing them there like magnets.

Obviously the guys on the Super Bowl teams aren't going to play. Who cares?

The Pro Bowl after the Super Bowl is amazingly anti-climactic. This at least you stick the game in between the title games and the Super Bowl. You get a week of no football and put a game in there. It will attract more viewers than it would after the Super Bowl, no question.

I think it is a fine decision. SB players just won't play. There will need to be contract adjustments for some, so that the Pro Bowl team incentive is paid even if they don't play the game.

Dumb??? Why? because the Pro-bowl is just so great right now?? It at least fills in a hole between, it is a smart move using a now useless game and puttying in a hole with chewed bubble gum.

I agree. Putting the Pro Bowl in an outrageously expensive destination after everybody's stopped thinking about football made no sense. This way it will be a better showcase for the non-SB players and a way to keep the focus on the NFL during the dead week. Lots of sports media folks will probably camp out in the SB city for the full two weeks, guaranteeing more coverage of the "game." Yes, you'll lose the players from the Superbowl teams, but they were the most likely to opt out anyway because they were burnt out.

This is actually one of Goodell's better decisions. Put this game at a decent time (3:30pm or so) and I will gladly watch it the week before the Super Bowl. The week after the SB I just can't be bothered. And it was already announced that the players participating in the Super Bowl will be replaced.

You're way off base. This has win/win written all over it.

I will give Goodell credit for this decision as well. You otherwise suffer through two weeks of nothing before the big game and try to fill the time. Get the players who aren't on the final two teams to finish their season out a few weeks early and make the Pro Bowl the appetizer to the Super Bowl.

Football is a team sport, so throwing together a bunch of great athletes who have not worked in the same system is never that appealing to watch, and certainly is less so after the Super Bowl. At least it can now be packaged as part of the build up to the most watched game of the season (though a game not nearly as worthy to be watched while lacking the Patriots as the AFC representative). If players elected from the Super Bowl teams don't play, who cares. The fact is you have a long list of players seemingly bowing out of the game in any event, so it wouldn't seem to make much of a difference.

Obviously Super Bowl participants would not play. I'd think the Pro Bowl participants would be picked as usual, and at that point, the players chosen would have that status of being picked. The league should make it a rule that Pro Bowl bonus clauses must be honored by the Super Bowl teams for those that were chosen. The pros are that (a) the participants, particularly those of non-playoff teams, will have had 2 weeks less of a lag time since they last played (4 weeks instead of 6); and (b) the game will not be so anti-climatic. I think it's a good idea.
