There seems to be a consensus around this draft having 6 "elite" players: JLong, Dorsey, Ryan, McFadden, CLong and Gholston. I would add Ellis to this list to give the Pats their working list (assuming they don't trade up):
JLong
Likely: #1
Floor: #5 (not in play)
Dorsey
Likely: #2
Floor: #5 (not in play)
Ryan
Likely: #3
Floor: #8
Partners: Carolina #13, Chicago #14
Reading: Possible but may have to give a discount in trade
McFadden
Likely: #4
Floor: #12
Partners: Denver #12, Chicago #14, Detroit #15 (and others)
Reading: Likely with Detroit being the prime target
CLong
Likely: #4 - #7
Floor: #9
Partners: Minn #17 (and others)
Reading: Possible but may have to give a discount in trade
Gholston
Likely: #6 - #7
Floor: #9
Partners: Tampa #20, SF #29
Reading: Possible but no real opportunities in prime range (#10 - #15)
Ellis
Likely: #5 - #7
Floor: #9
Partners: Cincy #9, NO #10, Denver #12, Carolina #13 (and others)
Reading: Likely with lots of interested parties bidding against each other
So I evaluate the trade possibilities in this order:
McFadden = Best fit to Detroit for #15 and #45
Ellis = Lots of potential partners
Ryan = Partners may be willing to wait for 2nd tier QBs
CLong = Unless Minn bites, cost too high for interested teams to trade up
Gholston = Tweener with no 3-4 teams in prime trade range
So I would agree with your assessment of Ellis being the key at #7, but only if McFadden doesn't slip.
