I know. I think its a common draftnik tendency to want to go gang busters when addressing a need area in any given draft. How many years in a row have we seen mock drafts where people wanted to draft 2 or 3 OLBs or ILBs?

To be fair, BB actually did that in 2008 (ILB, although, admittedly he didn't draft Guyton) and 2010 (TE), so it's not out of the question.

JEKYLL AND HIDE (CONCERNS)

WR Ricardo Lockette, Fort Valley State- If you look at the workout alone Lockette hit a home run coming in at 6021, 211 pounds and ran in the mid 4.3 range in the 40-yard dash. He then had a very good workout posting a 10’7 broad jump and 4.19 short shuttle. His vertical was solid at 35 ½ inches but his 3-cone time was a concern falling well below the average 6.9 with a 7.15.

Either way his workout was solid making you believe this kid dominated the D2 ranks like Edmond Gates did with this athletic ability. Well like we said you would think he dominated. Looking back at the numbers and the tape we are baffled how he did no produce.

He also told scouts his poor quarterback play was why he did not do well during the season but failed to record a catch with better quarterbacks at the HBCU Game and had multiple drops in the NFLPA Game. While he is very athletic we believe he is an outstanding track guy who just isn’t a football player right now. We are also concerned about the fact he failed a drug test in 2009 and missed the season. The explanation we have received there doesn’t add up either. J. B Scouting

Okay drop him from my PFA list.

#17 - Gabe Carimi, OT, Wisconsin - I think the Pats are in a situation where they've got to get at least two OL who can really play from this draft. In this scenario, the Tackles I really like won't be there at #28. I like Carimi slightly more than Solder, Smith, and Castonzo.

#28 - Muhammad Wilkerson, DT, Temple - One of my binkies. I think he can play the Richard Seymour role, although probably not as well as Big Sey.

TRADE: Patriots Trade #33 to Jacksonville for #49 and #80. Don't see anyone at #33 the Patriots would feel would present a decent value.

#49 - Jabaal Sheard, OLB, Pittsburgh - Maybe not a big-name pass rusher, but a college DE that will be a very good 3-4 OLB, I believe. Would love to see the Pats pick some LBs that can push guys like Rob Ninkovich.

#60 - Stefan Wisniewski, G/C, Penn State - The 2nd OL that can play that I referenced above. Solid interior lineman who has a lot of those intangibles I think the Patriots will like.

#74 - DeMarco Murray, RB, Oklahoma - Kid's just a productive player against top-notch competition. I think RB is an area of need, but I can't see the Pats taking one higher than the 3rd round.

#80 - Ras-I Dowling, CB, Virginia - With this many picks, why not take a gamble on greatness? Dowling could be a steal here, IF he can find a way to stay healthy.

#92 - Chris Conte, FS, California - Has all the tools to be an outstanding FS, and would provide insurance in case the Pats grow sick of/get an offer for Brandon Meriweather.

#123 - DeMarcus Love, OG, Arkansas - Fine... he isn't a tackle. But he is a very good offensive lineman. Move him inside, and I think he's a long-term starter. And yeah, I'd really like to solve our long-term needs on the OL with this draft.

#156 - Ahmad Black, SS, Florida - I'm actually not a huge fan, but there's no denying that the kid's a playmaker, and I'm sure Urban Meyer will talk him up to Belichick.

#184 - Aldrick Robinson, WR, SMU - Fast, quick, decent hands. Project WR.

[For first-round picks and pick 33, you can choose a player ranked no more than THREE slots ahead (e.g., as high as #14 for #17, etc.).
For day two picks (anything from 34-96), you can choose a player ranked no more than SIX slots ahead.
For day three picks (anything after 96), you can choose a player ranked no more than TEN slots ahead]

Based on CBS rankings updated 3/5/11

Day 1

#17 JJ Watt DE Wisconsin. Size, length, and freakish athleticism. I think he'll be a great fit for the defense if he does indeed last this long.

#28 Derek Sherrod OT Miss State. Long arms and smooth athlete to protect Brady now that Light looks like he's gone. I could also see us trading down out of here but this guy is probably the last 1st round quality tackle left so I'll take him here.

Day 2

-Trade Down with Detriot. #33 (580) for #44 (460) + #106 (82) + #137 (37.5).

-Trade up with Arizona picks #60 (300) + 74 (220) for #38 (520).

#38 Justin Houston DE/LB Georgia. I don't see Houston with a 1st round pick, but in the 2nd round he offers excellent value. A little bit more explosiveness than Cunningham and at 270 and 6'3 he fits the size profile well enough to justify the pick. His long 34.5" arms also compensate for lack of height. The Pats now have two young OLBs to groom who can hopefully rush the passer a bit better in 2011.

#44 Danny Watkins OG Baylor. A mature prospect who looks like you could plug him in and play him right from the start. Pats might just need that with the way the Mankins situation has gone downhill.

Day 3

#92 Edmond Gates WR Abilene Christian. Has the lightning quickness the Pats covet along with the deep speed. 4.37 40 at the Combine. Not just a track star, this guy looks like a football player. He seems capable of working Patriots type routes and taking them the distance if there's daylight. Could be the next Mike Wallace.

#106 Jacquizz Rodgers RB Oregon State. Something about his build and his moves make me think Emitt Smith. Lowest man to the ground wins and the guy looks surprisingly effective at squirting into the endzone. Pass catching ability is also a plus. Between Rodgers and Woodhead, the Pats RBs would have the shiftiness to drive defenses batty.

#123 Buster Skrine CB Chattanooga. Has the big time quicks, speed, and agility that the Pats value in a nickel corner.

#137 Traded for future 4th round pick.

#156 Greg Romeus DE/LB Pittsburgh. Intriguing potential when healthy. He'd essentially be a redshirt pick like Tate.

#184 Jake Kirkpatrick C TCU. Another developmental OL pick for Dante to work on.

I'm still playing around with names but I like something like this :

17 - Cameron Heyward. Feel free to substitute Wilkerson in if you prefer.

28 - Danny Watkins. Feel free to substitute Wiesniewski if you prefer.

33 - Brooks Reed. Feel free to substitute in your OLB of choice.

*** That gets me the DE, OLB, OG we need.

60 - WR of choice, this spot should get us someone like Greg Little, Cobb or Jernigan who all interest me in one way or another.

74 - Stephen Schilling

92 - James Carpenter

123 - Stevan Ridley

156 - Willie Smith

184 - Jake Kirkpatrick

I end up with a good OLB prospect, a legit DE, 3 interior OL, a mid round WR and a nice OT in Carpenter who should be a good #3 guy behind Vollmer and a hopefully re-signed Light. OG/C is more urgent for me with Neal gone and Mankins likely in his last year. I want a WR with Welker and Branch in their final years. Edelman is OK as a slot guy but I want another decent prospect to compete with Tate and Price outside.

Not really having a problem with these players but you reached for all of them about a half round sooner than they should be taken. That's not playing BB's value game. He is patient, trades down when he can get more value and does not take a player too early unless he feels he has to.

I don't think I reached for Heyward unless you don't want to get him. I definitely don't think he makes it to #28.

On the other two I just picked the names that people seem to want right now, it would have more name value with Wiesniewski or Pouncey and, say, Houston. I don't care too much about the specific name as long as I'm taking someone in the group that will be going around that time. I gave up on specific names when we took Cunningham (who looks fine now) when I was looking at half a dozen other OLB. I'm more into taking an appropriate player from a group that will be taken around then and I think the top OG and second OLB group will go in that area.

I strongly agree that the best we really can do is guess position with 2-4 options at the position.
