It's early, but I wanted to make a dry run to see what kind of options the Patriots could have on the board as they make their selections. More well-thought out ones will follow in the weeks ahead. This mock, unlike my usual ones, features only one trade:
1 Oakland - JeMarcus Russell QB LSU
2 Detroit - Calvin Johnson WR Georgia Tech
3 Cleveland - Adrian Peterson RB Oklahoma
4 Tampa Bay - Joe Thomas OT Wisconsin
5 Arizona - Gaines Adams DE Clemson
6 Washington - Jamaal Anderson DE Arkansas
7 Minnesota - Amobi Okoye DT Louisville
8 Houston - Brady Quinn QB Notre Dame
9 Miami - LaRon Landry S LSU
10 Atlanta - Alan Branch DT Michigan
11 San Francisco - Levi Brown OT Penn St
12 Buffalo - Leon Hall CB Michigan
13 St. Louis - Jarvis Moss DE Florida
14 Carolina - Patrick Willis LB Mississippi
15 Pittsburgh - Chris Houston CB Arkansas
16 Green Bay - Trade. First I had them pencilled in for Ginn. Then Lynch. Then Olsen. Then I realized that they need a lot of help, and that Carriker is on the board. Therefore Green Bay trades the #16 and #47 to New England for #24, #28, and their sixth round pick. I think this represents a win-win scenario. New England drafts Adam Carriker DE Nebraska
17 Jacksonville - Reggie Nelson S Florida
18 Cincinnati - Greg Olson TE Miami
19 Tennessee - Robert Meachem WR Tennessee
20 New York Giants - Lawrence Timmons LB Florida St
21 Denver - Anthony Spencer DE Purdue
22 Dallas - Dwayne Jarrett WR USC
23 Kansas City - Tony Ugoh OT Arkansas
24 Green Bay (from Seattle via New England) - Marshawn Lynch RB Cal
25 New York Jets - Darrelle Revis CB Pittsburgh
26 Philadelphia - Ted Ginn WR Ohio St
27 New Orleans - Dwayne Bowe WR LSU
28 Green Bay (from New England) - Sidney Rice WR South Carolina
29 Baltimore - Jon Beason LB Miami
30 San Diego - Aaron Ross CB Texas
31 Chicago - Joe Staley OT Central Michigan
32 Indianapolis - Paul Poslusny LB Penn St
Second round
33 Oakland - Brandon Meriweather S Miami
34 Detroit - Ben Grubbs G Auburn
35 Tampa Bay - Anthony Gonzalez WR Ohio St
36 Cleveland - LaMarr Woodley LB Michigan
37 Chicago (from Washington via NY Jets) - Charles Johnson DE Georgia
38 Arizona - Arron Sears G Tennessee
39 Houston - Justin Blaylock G Texas
40 Miami - Ryan Kalil C USC
41 Minnesota - Marcus McCauley CB Fresno St
42 San Francisco - Justin Harrell DT Tennessee
43 Buffalo - Brandon Siler LB Florida
44 Atlanta - Michael Griffin S Texas
45 Carolina - Zach Miller TE Arizona St
46 Pittsburgh - Brandon Mebane DT Cal
47 New England (from Green Bay) Tough call. As much as I like Harris here, I'll take Josh Wilson CB Maryland
48 Jacksonville - Marcus Thomas DT Florida
49 Cincinnati - Eric Weddle S Utah
50 Tennessee - Daymeion Hughes CB Cal
51 New York Giants - David Irons CB Auburn
52 St. Louis - Brian Leonard RB Rutgers
53 Dallas - Eric Wright CB UNLV
54 Kansas City - Craig Davis WR LSU
55 Seattle - Victor Abiamiri DE Notre Dame
56 Denver - Jason Hill WR Washington St
57 Philadelphia - Tony Hunt RB Penn St
58 New Orleans - Jonathan Wade CB Tennessee
59 New York Jets - David Harris LB Michigan
60 Miami (from New England) - Tim Crowder DE Texas
61 Baltimore - Manny Ramirez G Texas Tech
62 San Diego - Aundrae Ellison WR East Carolina
63 New York Jets (from Chicago) - Tanard Jackson DB Syracuse
64 Tampa Bay (from Indianapolis) - HB Blades LB Pittsburgh
Third round
65 Oakland - Steve Smith WR USC
66 Detroit - Fred Bennett CB South Carolina
67 Cleveland - Drew Stanton QB Michigan St.
68 Tampa Bay - Ray McDonald DE Florida
69 Arizona - Quinn Pitrooster DT Ohio St
70 Denver (from Washington) - Andy Alleman G Akron
71 Miami - Kenny Irons RB Auburn
72 Minnesota - Paul Williams WR Fresno St
73 Houston - Ryan Harris OT Notre Dame
74 Buffalo - James Marten OT Boston College
75 Atlanta - Quentin Moses DE Georgia
76 San Francisco - Ilaika Alama-Francis DE Hawai'i
77 Pittsburgh - Samson Satele C Hawai'i
78 Green Bay - Kareen Brown DT Miami
79 Jacksonville - Troy Smith QB Ohio St
80 Cincinnati - No pick (Ahmad Brooks)
81 Tennessee - Dan Bazuin DE Central Michigan
82 New York Giants - Johnnie Lee Higgins WR Texas Tech
83 St. Louis - Aaron Rouse S Virginia Tech
84 Carolina - Kevin Kolb QB Houston
85 Kansas City - AJ Davis CB North Carolina St
86 Seattle - Michael Bush RB Louisville
87 Denver - John Wendling S Wyoming
88 Dallas - Doug Free OT Northern Illinois
89 New Orleans - Rufus Alexander LB Oklahoma
90 New York Jets - Buster Davis LB Florida St.
91 Philadelphia - Tim Shaw LB Penn St
92 New England - Frankly, I don't know what to do. Based on Best Value, I'd give the edge to Darius Walker. But we're also in the neighborhood of Gattis, DeShaun Wynn, Paul Soliai, Stewart Bradley, Steve DeOssie, Sabby Piscitelli, and Rhema McKnight among others. After this, we only have one more pick in the top 160. It might be a little high, but let's give the Pats Zak DeOssie LB Brown, whom I like a bit more than Bradley.
93 Buffalo (from Baltimore) - Darius Walker RB Notre Dame
94 San Diego - Sabby Piscatelli S Oregon St
95 Chicago - Trent Edwards QB Stanford
96 Indianapolis - Travarous Bain CB Hampton

From this draft board, I'd much rather have Darrelle Revis with the 1st and Brian Leonard with the 2nd. . . .

Yeah, why trade up, unless they want to get rid of Seymour.
I don't think he did that much last year. Where was he in the Indy game?
Don't think DeOssie is a 3rd round pick. Brown? He can run fast, so what?
1) If they were to get Carriker, it would be to replace Green more than Seymour, though replacing Seymour could be the long term plan. Also, this could be protection against not being able to reach an extension agreement with Warren.
2) Seymour played injured. His elbow AND his knee. Also, since you missed it, the entire defense disappeared in the 2nd half because they were exhausted.
3) DeOssie is definitely worth a 3rd round pick. Heck, I'd say he might even be worth a 2nd rounder.
Dryheat -
I think that a more likely scenario for this trade would be the Pats trading their 2 1sts and their 3rd to the Packers for their 1st 3 picks.
This is definitely an interesting mock draft. I like the Picks of Carriker, Wilson and DeOssie. They are all value picks. Carriker because he protects the Pats against losing Warren. Wilson because he brings great talent to the CB position and DeOssie because he fills a clear need at ILB.
Nice work overall, but I just can't see either of the Patriots picks. With Nelson and Spencer on the board, I can't see them trading up. Admittedly, both aforemented players get taken before the Patriots pick, but Revis is available at 24 and Pozluszny/Beason/Meriweather are available at 28.
In addition, I don't like the value in that trade on the Patriots' side. The top 1st and the 3rd for the Packers' 1st would be a much fairer trade, or the Packers could throw in their 3rd or 4th to the original deal.
As for the 2nd-rounder, I can't see us selecting Wilson over Weddle and Harris. I don't dislike Wilson, but the other two players would be vastly preferable. I would likely take Weddle here.
At the 3rd-rounder, I can't imagine not taking Bradley or Piscatelli here. DeOssie is not a Day 1 pick.
I would prefer a
24 Revis
28 Meriweather/Beason
96 Bradley/Piscatelli (depending on the above pick)
to a
16 Carriker
47 Wilson
96 DeOssie
Ironically enough, I like almost every other selection you make. Jarvis Moss goes a little high and Steve Smith goes a little low, but other than that fantastic work.

Just as a reminder, many people thought Lofa Tatupu wasn't a 1st day pick either. He got taken in the 2nd round by the Seahawks and many people have rated him one of the STEALS of that draft.
Sorry, but I can see DeOssie going to the Pats in the 2nd or 3rd round if they feel that is his value.
