Default WalterFootball.com Mock 3/4 - Matt McGuire

He has us taking

#23 - Darius Butler
#34 - Hakeem Nicks - Sintim, Andre Smith, Jeremy Maclin were available
#47 - Jason Phillips - Sean Smith, Dalmus, Robiskie and Will Moore and Iglesias were available
#58 - LeSean McCoy - Duke Robinson was still on the board

I use to think this guy knew what he was doing but after looking at this two round mock makes me wonder.

--He has Crabtree going to the Seahawks, that would be a lot of money tied up in two WR.

--Larry English going to the Bills at 11 I thought was high

--Josh Freeman going to the Jets and the second QB off the board.

--Most surprising is he has Andre Smith going at #38 and Jeremy Maclin at #39. Smith still has his pro day and was a top 10 pick before this show at the combine. If he is sitting their at #34 BB would have to adjust his draft board.

A running back? With us now having 5 on the roster?

FAIL for me.

Creator of the Pats must draft Jason Verrett in 2014 no matter the cost fanclub.

In terms of value, he actually did okay by NE in 3 of 4, the Jason Phillips pick is just plain ignorance of the NE LB corps - I like the kid, but unless he's got a larger frame to add weight than his Combine weigh-in numbers suggest, he's not a fit inside for NE.

1. Butler is a good CB who can also play some WR and return kicks, he's a great value. I'm not sure he's an upgrade over Wheatley, but he's okay.

2a. Hakeem Nicks fills a need, #3 WR, that might translate into a #1 down the road. Moss' contract lasts through 2010, plan now, avoid the rush.

2b. As noted above.

2c. LeSean McCoy is a good RB, a fine fit for NE's system. I don't see the need for a RB that early, but he's good value.

I like the players, but with the exception of Hicks, I don't care for the picks. I think there are other players who can better shore up the defense and add value to the offense.

WalterFootball.com: 2009 NFL Mock Draft by Matt McGuire

What really caught me by surprise is his thoughts at #3 in KC and Cassel. Interesting read.

BOR,

I do agree with some great value picks other then Phillips here but he does not even have Barwin in the first two rounds. I really think that BB will get a Vet to fill the #3 and take a chance on a WR in the third to develop. Brady needs smart players (I am still on the Tory Holt Bandwagon) to help him as he comes off his injury. I think that we could take a chance in the third with a decent WR class. Maybe if we get Holt, Furry or another quality WR3 with production in the league and draft a guy like Aaron Kelly from Clemson. He tested better then I thought with his size and maybe he could learn some things from Moss (similar body type) as he develops. He is six foot five with almost a 40 inch vert, this guy if he gets better body control would be a goal line threat.

The first two are unconventional but not unreasonable by any means. I'll give him points for independent thinking. After that, .

Given that he doesn't seem to consider the likes of Barwin, Gilbert and Wood day-1 guys at all, I'd be happier trading #23 for a 2nd & 3rd, then loading up.

Funny about Barwin. Just got the newest ProFootball Draft book and they rated Barwin as a second or third rounder even after they included combine info. Hey they are not the greatest know-it-alls but it makes you think.
Maybe Barwin at #58?
Some are still saying Maybin for us @#23. I say rubbish. This guy blew his first round shot with his slower that OT 40 speed.

I developed a low opinion of this site while reading their blog from the Senior Bowl, when it comes to NE, these cats have no clue on team make-up...it's for sure they don't understand a 3-4.

I'm not surprised he doesn't have Barwin in his two round mock, that requires projecting where a prospect can go, it's much easier to look where he's been and say he's an average TE (until you look at his Combine and realize how he stacks up against the other TE's in this class). Good coaches look at a player and see what could be, case in point: Artrell Hawkins. LB Coach Dean Pees went to his DC Eric Mangini, and suggested Hawkins be moved from CB to SS. Almost instantly a dysfunctional secondary started coming together. NFL Scouts projected Logan Mankins inside, not a great stretch of the imagination, but someone had to look at him and say 'h'mmmm, that's a fit.' Tedy Bruschi, Mike Vrabel, Adalius Thomas, all college DL. Stephen Neal was a wrestler. Eugene Wilson was drafted as a CB. Ray Ventrone is currently being developed as a WR. The guys at Walter see a nice flat two dimensional snapshot and seem to think that's how the world looks, Coach Belichick is watching a futuristic, multi-dimensional world when he's evaluating a prospect...kind of fun trying to see it his way, don'tcha think?

Scott Pioli & Co. traded for Tyler Thigpen. I mean, Matt Cassel. Yeah, Matt Cassel. They had to give up the No. 34 selection to do so, but also got Mike Vrabel in the trade. Now, they have two Thigpens on their team. One is named Matt Cassel, and the other is named Tyler Thigpen. I like Thigpen more than Cassel because Cassel gets too emotional during games. You can see him on the sidelines and he simply does not have much poise or confidence.

Either way, I think this says a lot about what NFL teams thought of Cassel outside of Josh McDaniels. Detroit did not want Cassel. Tampa did not want Cassel. Apparently, Minnesota did not want Cassel either. Hopefully, my statement that Cassel is the most overrated quarterback in the league holds up like it did last year with Derek Anderson.
Too emotional?

Hopefully? Does this guy bet $ on these sort of predictions? And if so watch out for a Gillooly in KC this season!

I'd like to get 4 def. players with our top 4 picks. I think it was Box who first brought it up. But, I think a 3-4 end is my first priority. I know it hasn't happened yet, but I think we will sign Jason Taylor. Pushes olb down a little and I think we can get a cb at 34. I just can't see us giving Big Sey another 40m/4yrs. I'm sure he'd get that on the open market. So, I think he walks after next year and don't want a rookie to replace him. Supposedly Jets will go 3-4 end. Tyson Jackson. So, I'm going with;

1. Jarron Gilbert - DE - San Jose St
2a Alphonso Smith - CB - Wake Forest
2b Connor Barwon - OLB - Cincinnatti (trade up from 47...giving up 3rd)
2b Patrick Chung - SS - Oregon (I'd be willing to trade up here too)

I'm still waiting for us to take a NG to backup Big Vince. I'd even consider T.Taylor
from Michigan with our Supple. pick. Prob 97. I know I've neglected the offense but we've
added F.Taylor,C.Baker. Kept R.Hochstein. Have T.Brady and L.Maroney coming back. I'm sure we'll pick up a decent wr to replace Gaffney. It seems off. players love the thought
of coming to NE to play with #12. Especially, the skill guys. Let's milk that mentality as long as we can. Yes, I'm concerned about the OL. And, it wouldn't surprise me a bit if we
take an ol or 2.

If the draft fell this way I'd be happy, though I'd hate to give up that third because I still want a C/G type to prime behind Neal.
