The problem with building too much of a reputation/fanbase is that you feel pressured to be the one to predict late risers/fallers/reaches. That need to shock and be different supersedes all rational common sense.

This happens to Kiper every year. I recall one mock had the Steelers taking Maurice Stovall in round 1 (over Holmes/Jennings). I know you got yourself a reputation for nailing a few unexpected picks, Mel, but let's be real here.

In the case of PFT, Florio recently write that he knows a source that believes Crabtree may fall out of the top 10 if he runs the 40 in under 4.50. Possible? Sure. But it hasn't happened yet, and to predict that Macklin and Hakeem Nicks (!?) will get taken ahead of Crabtree to me is stretching for the sake of making a stretch.

Given that PFT has built itself up in large part by stirring up controversy, playing both sides of the fence on issues, etc., then perhaps that may explain some of the selections here. Make a few odd selections and outraged fans respond - while Florio laughs all the way to the bank.

But I do have to say, there are definitely a few head-scratchers. Knowshon Moreno #6? Hakeem Nicks #9? Tampa Bay taking Alex Mack at #19?

You forgot to mention that you got robbed for Welker. 2nd round pick there was well worth it for the Dolphins.

The Dolphins 5-11 in 2007, that's just laughable.

#6 is pretty high for Moreno, but I could see it happen with a great combine and some other guys slipping. More likely he goes in the teens to twenties. Nicks over Maclin and Crabtree will never happen. Mack at #19 is a reach, but not totally unrealistic. A lot of teams are high on him from the sound of it. Most of all, if Everette Brown is on the board at #23 and the Pats pass him up, I'll be physically sick.

Join the Barwin binky club. It'll stop the nausea.

Seriously, though, remember BB's buying the groceries. And you can count on him to get what he thinks will improve the team most, not please the chatterboxes.

I like Barwin, just not as a first round pick. Brown has that unique combination of speed rushing ability combined with inside and outside moves and strength to hold up at the point of attack. His inside spin is Freeney-like, he's got a club move that's reminiscent of Reggie White and his rip is solid too. While I agree Belichick will do what he thinks is best for the team, I have a hard time believing he'd think Peria Jerry is better for the team than Brown. I could see skipping Brown for an offensive lineman, one of the inside linebackers or a corner, but Jerry? He just doesn't look like a 2 gap guy. Anything could happen I guess.

Jerry is actually strong enough for DE in the NE 3-4, he's certainly a much better choice than all the drafts predicting Cushing at #23.

Yeah, I didn't even notice Everette Brown slipping that far. Regarding Mack, I thought less of it being a reach and more that Tampa Bay would be looking at other positions (QB, DL, LB, CB).

Well, you know a lot more goes into playing as a 2 gap lineman in a 3-4 scheme than just strength. Hand positioning, leverage and balance matter a lot, since you're going to be engaged with two men at least some of time and you have the responsibility of controlling both adjacent gaps. Jerry doesn't strike me as a guy that likes to body up with linemen, and try to win that battle of the hands that matters so much. He seems much more comfortable as a penetrator. I haven't seen as much of him as I'd like, since there isn't much footage of him out there that's worth a damn, but I would agree that he'd be a lot better than Cushing, who I did see plenty of, and who seems maxed out already.

Cushing falling:

By most accounts Cushing was among the more impressive linebackers throughout the week of practice at the Senior Bowl. Rather than focusing on his athleticism and instincts on the field, however, scouts in the stands were buzzing about reports that Cushing spends thousands of dollars a month on nutritional supplements. While no one is claiming Cushing's supplements should be confused with illegal steroids, it does raise questions about how maxed out Cushing might be -- questions that could push the All-American down the board considering the top-end talent this year at linebacker.
